Help! Soup for a cold any suggestions?
I have a cold and am jonesing for some hot soup what to do help!
i'm sorry that you are feeling icky again and I don't have a soup recipe --have you tried good old honey lemon and warm water? plenty of rest, hot bath and massage.

Hi. Sorry about your cold. This may not be the most politically correct raw vegan thing to say...but you may want to consider a little miso soup with lots of ginger and garlic in it. I include this in my (otherwise 100% raw) diet a few times of week. I find this is a great way to get garlic and ginger into me and they help me stay well in the winter.
I use a heaping spoonful of mellow white miso in my mini-food processor, along with a big clove of garlic and piece of ginger. I sometimes also add a dash of sesame oil and/or a tiny bit of cayenne. I blend this together to make a miso mash. Meanwhile, I've heated some water just below the boiling point and add some to the food processor, blend again. Then I pour this liquid into my soup bowl along with more heated water and stir. Sometimes I add slivers of onion or scallions or grated carrot. There are many other ways to go about making miso soup as well.
I also drink some echinacea and ginger teas from time to time. Like I said, not p.c. for strident raw foodies but I feel these warm liquids do me good right now so they're staying.
I like to drink what Linda mentioned even though I am not sick. It just is very healthy and the fresh lemon and honey will do a body good. Also, if you have a juicer, try fresh ginger root with carrots. My wife and 2 of my kids were recently starting to feel a sniffle and a sore throat, I gave it to each of them (16oz) and it knocked it right out!

Thank you guys I appreciate it. I am still in bed today if you can believe it blasted. But anyway I will try them all. I have to get some supplies from whole foods tomorrow to do so. Thank goodness it is only 5 minutes away. It is raining like crazy here also. wish I could go out tonight and make some.

i agree with the miso soup. hubby and i just love it and include that in our diet b/c the miso is so good for you. i make it as close to raw as possible. that is, i cook it a little bit longer, but at a very low temp. it is probably about 115 to 125 degrees. frankly, there are different opinions out there concerning how hi a temp you can go without killing everything...but, i digress. either way, i do the miso as low as possible to keep it (at least as close to) raw as possible.
in pan put:
2 cups water
1-2 green onions sliced
1/2-1 carrot sliced thin
about 1 Tbl of wakame
2 tsp chopped fresh ginger
1 tsp vegan veggie broth powder (this just gives extra flavor)
Cover and let this heat for about 20 to 30 minutes at very low. It doesn't even really steam too much....just get it very warm. It needs to be warm enough to blend with the miso.
Once heated, take about 1/4 cup of broth (without veggies) out and put in little bowl. At this point, make sure that the broth is not steaming...if so, cool it off a little bit before you Whisk in 1Tbl red miso (some people use white but i think the red is FAR FAR FAR superior for this) to the little cup of broth. Then add this blended miso back to the entire pot (which you have removed from heat by now, forgot to say that) and stir up and eat right away. Eat a huge bowl of this! You will love it. It is the ultimate in comfort/sick food. And, the miso is very good for you. In Japan, they even eat miso soup for breakfast....and I have done just that!
Also, I know this sounds crazy, but, you should try taking a garlic bath. I do it quite often. Others think it is horrid, with the garlic smell....but, I am not bothered by it at all. Just fill a bath tub up and add about 1/2 cup of garlic powder or granules. Soak for at least 20 minutes. The garlic gets soaked in to all of your pores. (this is an idea that i got from this great book on herbal medicine called 10 Essential Herbs...love it!)
Hmmmm, everything I've ever read says never go over 105 to retain living foods.
I still use my crock pot to slow warm veggies in a miso base. I agree, all misos have a different flavor. Black, white, red or gold.
On the low setting. I've not tested the temp so I don't know if it's a valid use.
