Some seeds will not sprout because they have been cooked or treated in some way, before they were packaged and sold.

I just started sprouting a few days ago. You are doing the right thing, except sprouts like light, so you don't have to put them in a dark place. The more light, the greener they get, and I think the taste gets stronger that way. Green, however, is healthy. It means there is chlorophyll in it etc.

I just sprouted brown lentils, chick peas, sunflower seeds and what I think are little green suki beans.

    STEP BY STEP:
    DAY 1
Put small handfull of seeds into glass jar.
Add water to cover it. Let the seeds soak for a few hours. Mine soaked about 3 hours.
    Remove water.
Put the jar somewhere, like in the kitchen, and put either a cheese cloth, or a lid, or a dishtowel or something over it. The idea is, to keep the humidity in the jar, but still leave a little ventilation, like a little hole, open.

    DAY 2
Teeny signs of sprouts should be showing.
Pour water on, shake a little to rinse, remove water again.
    Put cloth over again.
(Rinse with water 2-3 times per day.)

    DAY 3
Sprouts should be big enough to start eating.

That's my experience, but I'm still new at sprouting.

    Good luck. :)

The soaking time and thesprouting time for everything varies. You need a chart for the times. Do you have any books which have a chart in them. Maybe you can google it and find a chart. If all else fails I will attempt to scan mine and forward it to you.
Tell me what you are trying to sprout now and I can tell you the times for that.

Where I live, the health food stores usually sell organic chick peas, organic seeds etc. If you ask in the store, they can tell you what will sprout.

There are also supermarkets here, that have realized that some people prefer organic produce. They also keep things like organic seeds on the shelf. Even seeds that are not organic, should sprout, but I just don't know if they have been treated with any chemicals.

I should mention that these sprouts should be kept moist. I had some sprouts standing by the oven we use to dehydrate crackers, and the sprouts dried up from the heat. I
think we need to give sprouts new water and rinse them, several times a day. (I am very new to sprouting.)

    Sprouting is very very easy.

A lot depends on what you're sprouting, though.

The first step is the same -- you soak the nuts, seeds, grains, or beans.

Alissa's book has a chart. If you have the book, you have all the instructions you need. If you don't have the book, get it right away.

You drain the soaked ***, rinse and set out to sprout. You don't need a bottle with cheesecloth or any special equipment. Just use a bowl. Spread the *** up the sides so they're not all in the bottom. Rinse several times a day, spreading again when you return the drained **** to the bowl.

When the tails start showing, you've sprouted. It's just that simple.

Now -- if it's nuts or seeds, you're done. If you want green sprouts, though, you need to expose the sprouts to light after a while; that's how they get green.

If you're starting with raw, fresh ***, it'll sprout.

Again -- get Alissa's book and/or search on this forum for the many many threads about sprouting (some within the last week!).

    Have fun.

^ I loved reading the parts on sprouting in Alissa's book. I never thought I'd ever actually do it but she makes it sound so easy and straightforward and fun hehe. The book has practically been attatched to my hip since I got it

Try getting your sprouts from a more reputable source. I think a lot of people here use www.sproutpeople.com.
