Default Smoothies Using Almond or Sesame Milk?

I didn't know, perhaps I should've posted this in the juicing section??

At any rate, I was wondering if there is any reason one couldn't use almond milk or sesame milk in a smoothy...in addition to water. Tonite I made a banana/peach/spinach/almond milk smoothie and it was divine!

Hadn't seen anything on this so thought I'd ask~~

    Thanks,

    Hi

I've been adding sesame seeds to the smoothies I make for myself and our children, so we get plenty of calcium. They taste great!

    Thumbs up Yes

I ALWAYS use almond milk, or cashew milk in my smoothies. It makes them so creamy! I had an almond milk, frozen banana and strawberry, and agave smoothie for breakfast. YUM YUM YUM! ;)

I, too, really like the flavor of adding sesame seeds to smoothies! I have also used cashews and that was tasty as well!

Thanks everyone! I really like the idea of adding sesame seeds. My daughter seems to really like them. Of course, I have to get her to drink a green smoothie as of yet, but that is another battle!

    Thanks for all the input!

Default I hesitate to write this

    Here's what I understand --

If you are trying to get the most nutrients out of the foods you eat, you wouldn't want to eat nuts and fruits together since they digest in the stomach at different rates.

The fruit breaks down very rapidly, whereas the nuts take much longer to digest. When eaten at the same time .. or if nuts are eaten less than an hour or so after fruits ... the broken-down fruit sits and "rots" in the stomach as it has to wait for the nuts before the stomach will empty. This not only leads to digestive problems, but your body gets less of the nutrients from the fruit since it's not in the proper place in the digestive system at the right time. (Be aware I'm using simplified language here.)

The reason I hesitated to write this is because I don't want to scare off anyone new to eating raw. If mixing nuts and fruits will keep you raw, that's more important in my opinion than trying to combine foods properly. Down the road, once you're firmly entrenched in the lifestyle ... or if you're having digestive issues or other things crop up ... you might wish to try using just water or juice in your smoothies.

Remember, a raw food smoothie will be different than what we've come to believe a smoothie is (that thing that's made with yogurt or sherbet or even soy and powders added). Food is different raw ... thank goodness!

p.s. Most kids love green smoothies. Smaller kids don't usually bat an eyelash at the color -- and the sweetness of the fruit usually cancels out any "green" taste. Other kids need to have it renamed like Monster Juice or The Hulk's Hit or something imaginative that will appeal to their particular interest. Some just naturally want to drink (or eat) anything that a parent is ooh-ing, ahh-ing, "oh my"-ing, and moaning in pleasure about!!

My question would be what about Nut milks? How long do they take in the stomach?? Same thing with blended smoothies??

    Thanks,

Nutmilks -- the same as nuts. According to food combining rules, don't drink/eat with or before fruit.

Since all smoothies are blended ;), I'm not sure what you mean by blended smoothies. If you mean green smoothies, the greens combine just fine with the fruit in the smoothie as greens are miscategorized as a vegetable (see Victoria Boutenko's Green for Life).
