    Default fat to muscle question

I did measurements today, and noted I lost half inch on my hips, thighs and stomach. I also lost a 1/4 inch on both arms (biceps), but I am significantly stronger as I have increased my weights recently.

The last time I took my measurements was the very end of November. So that's a little over a month. My scale has moved down maybe 1 to 2 pounds however.

Would one expect more loss on the scale due to the difference in the measurements? Or, does it sound like the fat is turning to muscle?

I am curious if anyone has some idea of how that transferance works.

I am no expert but I do know that our bodies respond differently. As far as my own personal experience with weight loss goes, I used to get down in the dumps when I only lost 2 pounds because I would be thinking 'here I am practically killing myself in the gym for 2 hours and expecting to see that I have lost 6 or 7 pounds at the end of the week... but I was reminded by the staff and trainers at the gym that muscle weighs more than fat, I was building muscle and losing fat, the scale didn't show it, but I was losing a ton of inches, my clothes were loose around my waist and my shirts starting looking baggy even though I hadn't lost a huge amount of weight in actual numbers...so after that, I didn't get so caught up with the numbers on the scale. I would lose 3/4 pounds and it would look like 10 or more because of the inches and I left it alone.

    Hi Plucked,

Congrats to you on your progress. Actually fat does not turn into muscle. Its more like your muscles strengthen but fat melts away. A good program of proper nutrition and exercise will cause anyone to get into shape, the speed of the transformation however is as different as each persons body.

Eat right, workout consistently and you will reach all your goals.:)

    Peace.

    plucked,
good topic! I'm curious about this too... is there an ideal fat to muscle ratio? or do you just go by how you feel?

There is really no ideal lean body mass to fat ratio guidelines though there are guidelines in the form of appropriate BMI ranges and at what bodyfat levels that are considered under, normal, over, and obese.

Since it is hard for the lay person to get a regular, accurate bodyfat reading it is best to go by where you feel is right FOR YOU !
