Wheatgrass?
I've heard so many wonderful things about wheatgrass. I would like to grow, juice??? wheatgrass, but I'm not sure about the whole process. Do I need a certain juicer? Anybody else done this. I also read somewhere that you can buy it in powder form. I would love to hear from someone who knows.

yes, you need a special wheatgrass juicer, "regular" juicers can't get the juice out of the wheatgrass. Also, take in wheatgrass juice in a small quantity. And that's about all I know. :)

Wheatgrass
I've grown wheatgrass for about a year and a half. It does take a special juicer to juice the grass, we have a Samson Juicer that does fine. I buy organic hard red winter wheat and grow it in flats on my patio. I have had trouble occasionally with mold, moving the flats into the open where it gets a little wind solved the problem.
There's tons of information on the net about wheatgrass. This is one of my favorite sites: www.wheatgrasskits.com. I started with one of their kits.
If you haven't tasted wheatgrass juice, you can find it in some juice shops and health food stores. The taste is quite strong, so you might want to try it before investing in growing it. DH & I like it, my daughter can't stand it as it upsets her stomach. I occasionally mix it in with green juice although most will tell you to sip it alone and not to eat for 20 minutes or so while it is absorbed into your system. I've never tried the dry, I'm not sure it would have the same effect as the fresh grass.
Hope this helps,
Tricia

You can build up to drinking as much as you wish. My former mentor built up to where he was drinking 25 ounces a day. Course, it was costing $25 a day. Funny, the cashier asked if that wasn't bad for him. You think anyone ever asked someone if they're drinking a Big Gulp if that was bad for him?

Victoria Boutenko has this special way of making wheat grass juice in a regular blender, and it works well.
You put in your wheatgrass or any greens you like, add lemon with the peel, this is the secret ingredient to make it palatable for those people who do not care for the taste, and then you add water, blend for a few seconds until well blended, then straing through a nut milk bag,
Voila' you have a nice refreshing green juice that is strained and tastes good, and cleans up very easily, and no special juicer to purchase.
I never liked green juices, until I tried this, and it is very tasty.

Any twin gear juicer will do wheatgrass but it will be more frothy than if you get the speciality juicer. I have grown wheatgrass for juicing just once and I found it easy but the juice made me sick. I will try again and add lemon juice.

Why does it make you sick? Just wondering? A few people have already mentioned that. Thanks for your suggestions. I will check into growing some. Will it do ok indoors? I have the 12 steps book from V.B. and have seen her green drink recipe. I have to buy some milk bags. Thanks again.

Thanks for the tip RP!
I will definately try that technique...
I have tried to get myself to drink wheatgrass many times, but my body will just not accept it (and a wheatgrass shot is such a small amount!)

Wheatgrass is a big detoxifer. You get sick if you have too many toxins in your system so its best to start out slow.

I have read and heard many places that wheatgrass isn't for human consumption. When you eat wheatgrass it'll make you sick. A lot of people use the juice and swear by it, but there are optimal nutrients in your everyday greens you find in the store, so that you don't need wheat grass or juice.
Our bodies don't use chlorophyll (sp?) as a plant does. And animals graze on grass but we just don't need it.

That's very interesting because soooo many people swear by how GOOD it is for you. So regular greens are just as good? HUMMMM....I guess I can live with that. It sure gets confusing, what is REALLY good for you, and what's not. I know Ann Wigmore is KNOWN for wheatgrass detoxification, right? YEP, I'm confused.

I know what you mean. There are so many different views on the stuff. You just have to decide for yourself in the end.
I was never able to develop a taste for it myself. A friend of mine used to buy flats of it and made juice all the time. She would get special drinks made at the juice bar with wheat grass juice in it, and I had a lot of trouble drinking it because of that wheat grass taste. It seemed to ruin the fruit flavor, unlike spinach/parsley/celery or whatever I put in my fruit smoothies that seem so mild compared to wheat grass juice.
I'm okay with not liking it after reading about it. I've seen it frozen in individual cubes, and you can get it at juice bars, that way you aren't making a huge commitment and trying it out first.

wheat grass juicer
I want to try juicing my own wheat grass. I already have a juicer and it works OK Has anyone tried the manual ones? Do they work? Does it just take too long?
Thanks

The manual devices produce a softer and sweeter taste. The electric still smells and taste like a good old lawn mowers. I've worked up to 4-6 oz at one sitting for wheatgrasss and wished it was hand cranked. My juice doesn't juice wheatgrass well at all. :)
