Greenies

I've fed my dog greenies in the past, but he is a pig--I mean pug :) and just tends to try to swallow them whole. They do work well for cleaning teeth, but I was afraid of not only bowel obstruction, but choking as well. (This is gross, but he alway passed them OK--but in a green chunk--which does tell me that they don't digest well at least not when swallowed whole).
I haven't given him one in a long time, but the last time I did, I gave him the giant size for like 100 pound dogs (so he COULDN'T swallow it) then threw it away when it got smaller. That worked OK.

Thank you Revell for posting this! I've thought about purchasing these, but have not, and I for sure won't now. It amazes me that some companies will be so careless with what they market to pet owners. Thanks for this warning!

I give my dog greenies. I have a bulk box of them. I've had no problems with him eating them. He's been eating them for a couple years now. Just like the article says,
Vets say nearly all dog treats, chews and toys can make your pets sick. They say it's important to keep a close eye on them.
Just like with greenies, any treat can cause these kind of problems. Dogs have choked and died from other treats, too.

Oh man, that is not good.
This reminds me of when my husbands dog had something funny coming out of his behind. Darryl looked and looked and finally realized it was pantyhose! So he kept pulling it out (think of a clown pulling a handkerchief out of his pocket and it never ends)...finally the hose came out.
Can you imagine this poor dog running around with a ladies' stocking flapping around out of his rear?

Call me strange ... but why would we feed ourselves raw food and then feed anything processed to our pets? Cats and dogs who eat raw meat and bones don't need things like greenies. They have nice, white teeth and good breath.
One of my sister's dog had a problem with greenies. Now she feeds only raw food and the dogs are both just fine. I have cats who eat raw as well. I would never even think of giving them greenies (yes, they make them for cats now).

You are right Deb2005. Our little boy (dog) thinks flax crackers are the best treat on the planet. He eats far more of them than we do. And don't let anyone think they are going to get one without him getting one too. He eats them with and without us. Now if we could just teach him to make them. His main diet is whatever we are eating at the time.

Wow, Doe, I would't have thought of dogs eating flax crackers, but I guess they'll eat about anything. I hope he's getting some meat as well. :) We have cats, which are obligate carnivores. They get only meat (rabbit or chicken) and bones, no veggies. (They actually get sick on veggies and grains.) It's sort of nice that they don't try to snitch any of our dinner!
The stuff they make that's called "pet food" is so bad. It's like junk food for an animal. And the stuff that the vets prescribe is the worst. Two of our kitties almost died from it and they recovered completely when we put them on raw meat and bones. That's one of the things that made me consider a raw diet for myself.

Since we are on the subject of dogs & raw diets, is it healthy to feed a dog a Raw Vegan Diet. I would love it if that could be done, because I hate feeding my dogs meat. The only thing that makes me wonder is I am pretty sure that dogs eat meat. The whole thought of giving my dog dead raw meat is more than I can handle. I do give them raw veggies & fruit during the day.

Some natural pet stores around here sell raw meat specially packaged in the freezer. I think that is pretty wild! You might want to check around. I'm not talking about Petco or Petsmart, it would have to be a smaller store that specializes in natural pet diets.
On second thought, you didn't want to feed your dog meat, did you? I would get quite squeamish about that myself, but thought it might be easier to feed them something pre-made like what I mentioned above. A lot of folks have had great health results feeding their dogs raw meat.

Very true. I used to give the dogs raw hides, but when I saw that Cleo was eating them within minutes I got worried becuase she was constipated after that. Zeus will just seem to gnaw on them until they get gross. So I just rather not give them the rawhides. Best thing to give them to gnaw on would be large raw beef bones.

I totally forgot about this thread. Was wondering what else I'd put up here.
Good time now that there's raw pets section.
Thank you for bringing it up again Portiz. (Are those green things still being sold?)
