    Default Traveling/Flying Raw

Does anyone have advice for staying 100% raw while traveling, particularly to a foreign country? I'm starting to plan a trip to the Dominican Republic this summer. Obviously, I can expect for there to be lots of fruits available as it is a tropical island. But I know the water is not drinkable, and I heard that you cannot really eat the raw vegetables either as they are rinsed with the tap water. I will be there for 2 weeks or more. Any ideas? Does anyone else have experience with traveling to a Latin American country? Also, I'm not sure what the regulations are for flying/luggage. What can I take with me on the plane? Am I allowed to pack knives and cutting boards in my luggage? If you have any knowledge about any of these things, please share!!!

Hi Mallory ~ If you go here: http://www.youtube.com/user/okraw/videos?query=travel
and then type in "travel" up in the search box (upper right), John Kohler has videos on how he travels raw that might be of help to you.

Perhaps if you purchase some ceramic knives they would bring less attention to your bag in an x ray.
I have not been to South America but I have been to Central America and did not have a problem. You could arm yourself with a filter bottle or filter straw to help out.
You can take raw bars such as lara bars with you. You could also take some green powder such as vitamineral green. Other than that you can live on fruit which you peel.

Yeah, I was thinking that only eating peel-able fruit would be my last resort, because I'm afraid that without greens or vegetables I would eventually have some kind of deficiency. But bringing green powder is a fantastic idea! :) Ill definitely have to do that. Where can I get a filter bottle? Is that what you used in Central America?

This is what you use if you are drinking a glass of water in a restaurant and do not want to use a bottle.

Your best bet would probably be to call the airlines and ask them. Sometimes on your receipt you will find information also. When I was a flight attendant and went to Costa Rica, I took dehydrated goodies with me and I didn't have a problem with customs. They put us under the same scrutiny as the passengers. But, that was a while ago and rules change often in that industry. Give your airlines a call.

Definitely second getting a filter bottle or a filter of some sort!!
I have traveled with cookware and utensils and dried foods, but it was a while ago for international travel. Hopefully you can at least bring nuts and maybe D'd kale or something!

PS - Last week I did a domestic flight with a blender (Tribest Personal - awesome for making smoothies and soups while traveling) and knives in my checked baggage with no issue but of course it may be different for international.

    Good luck!

I too have flown (domestic) with our Blendtec - twice. Because our local airport is nearby, I actually took the blender ahead of time and showed it to the security folks so I would know. I was not going to have it confiscated at the airport - wink!

They said because of the blades in the carafe - to put the carafe in the check in luggage. But that it was okay to put the motor base in my carry on. This was 10 months ago.

Same flight I had knives in the checked luggage too. Big knives... But again - a domestic flight.

I will definitely look into getting one. I'm not sure if a filter is enough to make the water drinkable, but it will still probably be good to have. Thank you for the links.

To queenbee and DebB, I have a small blender too. Gonna try cramming it in my suitcase! Thanks for the feedback. (:

Check that it will work where you are going. You guys have different voltage to most other countries.
