Thread: pomegranate

    Default pomegranate

I've wanted to try this fruit for a long time. I recently saw some in the store here. Before I buy it, can someone confirm that I am only supposed to be eating the seeds, right?

Yes, you open it up and eat the seeds: pomegranate

I may be the odd one out. Yes, I eat the seeds, but then I spit out the woody interior of the seeds. Not a pretty way to eat them which is why I usually only eat them when I'm alone. *Ü*

I think you are probably not alone Debs. Though I suspect most people who don't like the woody seed just don't bother with pomegranates. I love them. They remind me of my father. When I was about 6 years old we learned about Ceres and Persephone at school and I came home and asked my father if I could try pomegranates and he bought me one :)

I like the seeds to chew on, I add them to salads, and sometimes juice them. Love pomegranate seeds!!!

I remember coming to the U.S. from France one time where pomegranates are called "grenades". And so I was in the local supermarket's produce section wondering if they had any pomegranates, and some worker asked if he could help me find anything. So, not really thinking, I said, "Yes, do you have any grenades?" He gave me the weirdest look. I then realized I had said something not quite right.

"Oh, I meant pomegranates!" I told him. I had to explain how they are called grenades in France. By the way, that's where the liqueur grenadine comes from - grenades... I mean pomegranates.

coming from the UK, I would have known what you meant or maybe it had more to do with having a father who spoke fluent French, having lived there in the 60s.

I've never juiced a pom. Do you juice only the seeds? Because someone posted recently to juicing the whole pom...

Yes, I juice the whole thing. I have an Omega 8004. I cut it up to fit and it discards the "carcass" so to speak. They had them on sale at WF recently and I decided to try it!

Thanks laughalways - I'd love to juice them. I think I'll wait to hit a sale, they're kinda pricey here.

I've just cut them in half and squidged them between my hands before now. I prefer to eat them though.

I can't remember where I read it, but the non organic pomegranate rinds tends to hang onto the insecticides the fruit is sprayed with and should not be pressed with the seeds to make juice. I can't find organic ones here so I chop off the the very top and bottom, score the skin around the fruit, and break it apart for the seeds under water in a bowl. The rind floats, the seeds sink, and the red staining juice is kept from spraying the groggy dumb ass who keeps putting on his white shirts before juicing in the morning.
