    Default Chia Seeds Taste? Bitter?

    Hey all...

I'm new to chia seeds. I ordered some milled chia seeds from nutiva. I have been using a few tablespoons in my protein shake, and my shake has tasted a bit funny. But I tried to make some salad dressing, that had salt, garlic, cumin, and I decided to add
some chia to thicken etc. It completely ruined it. It was sooo bitter. I mean I like my dressings salty, but it completely killed it.
So are Chia seeds bitter? I read they were tasteless similar 2 flax. Or did I get a bad batch? It says good until Oct 2013

    Just curious... Blech.

I think you may have gotten a bad batch. I love chia seeds and make chia pudding all the time. They are rather bland, definitely not bitter. I keep mine in the freezer so they stay fresh.

Yeah thanks. I contacted Nutiva. They were very cool, they mentioned I must have had a bad batch. They offered to send me a replacement
which is awesome because I didn't even order from them, I was just asking them if it was normal etc. So cool. Plus the place I ordered it from was all out... anyways. I will try my chia seed adventures again. I want more Omega 3's, not just all the massive amounts of omega 6 I have
been getting unbeknownst to me. Balance baby!

Try to get in the habit of tasting each ingredient before it is added. I doubt it was the chia. I think it's more likely the oil had gone bad or it was the cumin. You don't say what your liquid base was but I'd suspect those, or the cumin first as cumin is a bitter tasting spice/seed.

Nope it was the chia, I tasted some by itself and spit it out... so bitter. blech. But more is coming, I think it was just an isolated thang.
