Default GMO alert - do you trust Whole Foods?

    http://www.naturalnews.com/037523_Wh...ret_video.html

Here is a link to natural news covering the story. What do you guys think? I personally have learned to take everything with a grain of salt, but it doesn't surprise me one bit. I also went around reading the labels in Walmart just to see how many products has HFCS and GMOs and had to stop, because it was so daunting. Rule of thumb: if it doesn't say "all natural," steer clear (for those of you just waking up anyway). The opinion's on this VARY dramatically. Some say Whole Foods is doing its best, others not so much. I think if they were really trying their best they would neither lie nor coach their employees into lying about GMO's. And why AREN'T they supporting Proposition 37 in California?

    There is also this article.

If anyone has the knowledge, they should post a list of the most TRUSTED organic resources (online sites, stores, etc). If there is one already a link is very much appreciated.

Its getting to the point you can't trust anyone these days. If I were a cynic I'd say anything being sold to a consumer has a vested interest unless its from a non-profit organization or volunteer group.

Well I've heard that they apparently don't even mark some products as GMO, if they are. I'm sure anyone can just slap a label on a bag or box and call it "organic" or "all natural". I mean, All Natural Cheetos? Really?

Judging from some of the comments below the article, it seems like there's ex-employees who are vouching for the information. /shrug
I don't shop at Whole Foods, so I guess I'm not bothered by it that much, but I honestly wouldn't past anyone to lie about their product. When it comes down to it, it's about making money.

We have different rules about GM (we don't worry that anyone will think we are talking about a motor car!) from the rules you have over there. At the end of the day we have to take an awful lot on trust though.

Here they have to mark Cheeto's and Dorito's with a GMO "T" ( for Transgenico). However the "T" is small and placed in the lowest corner of the bag so that when it is displayed, you can't even see it.

The word 'Natural' is meaningless, however if Prop 37 passes, the only foods that will be able to be labeled 'Natural' in California will be whole foods in their unprocessed state. So a bag of almonds would be able to be called natural but packaged, processed almond milk wouldn't. The 'Natural' products industry is freaking out nearly as much as Monsanto over this issue. When Prop 37 passes, consumers will start to learn just how many of their favorite 'natural' brands contain GMO's. My hope is that those natural brands will switch to non-GMO ingredients before the labeling takes affect - its in everyone's best interest anyway that they make the switch.

I'm one of the founders of shopOrganic.com. We're totally passionate about organics and the opposition to GMO's. We actually just did a re-launch this week after checking on every product on our site for its GMO status. We're now shopOrganic & shopGMOfree and every single product on our site is non-GMO. I can assure you that most health food stores, and certainly all Whole Foods stores carry products with GMO's that are labeled 'Natural'. We have it a bit easier as raw foodies - most gmo ingredients are in processed foods - all we really have to worry about is papaya (from hawaii), and non-organic corn and zucchini. Raw makes it so much simpler, doesn't it? :)

There was a similar story to this where they were saying the whole food organic line was from China. But I like you take everything with a grain of salt. Hey they're doing the best they can right?

Actually, if any food has the "USDA Organic" label, it must meet strict guidelines:

If it just says organic in the title, etc, then those rules do not apply.

That's funny. I JUST discovered your site a few weeks ago and when I was reading the ingredients I was happy, because you seemed more upfront than other sites I had found about GMO. Good to know. ^^ Keep up the awesome work.

Strict guidelines, eh? I have been reading about more corporations buying out organic businesses. Or even making their own. Someone needs to make a list with all trusted sources of organic and non-gmo.

Speaking of Prop 37, I recently got an email about that asking for volunteers to call people in CA in the next 2 days to urge them to vote. Here's a link: http://www.carighttoknow.org/volunteer

At this point we have to trust the USDA Certified Organic. You can check out this article for more information on so-called trusted brands that were bought out:

    http://www.naturalnews.com/036834_Ka...r_boycott.html

This just refers to packaged food. If you eat mostly produce as I do then I go by the USDA label.

    Gianni,

My boyfriend and I were discussing this a few weeks a go being that I was giving a speech on GMOs here at my college in California. In my research I discovered that Brazil has GMO labeling laws and I was quite impressed. My boyfriend is Brazilian and we live there part-time. When I mentioned this to him he said that though this might be the case, he has never seen anything labeled.

Indeed that "T" in the corner is barely noticeable. But now that I know what to look for I will keep my eyes open. Thanks for the tip.
