Fury!!!
FURIOUS!!!
Why? Because my mother, who I have provided tons of research to and even purchased a DVD about nutrition for, told me that her MEDICAL DOCTOR told her not to eat raw fruit because it would give her diabetes!!! What the...??? This is a woman who practically lives on Coke, Lay's Potato chips and candy bars...BUT NO...she shouldn't eat RAW FRUIT because IT will give her diabetes??? OH MY GOSH!!!
PLEASE people DO NOT believe YOUR MD's when it comes to nutrition. They do not get nutritional training in MEDICAL school. They are MEDICAL doctors. They learn to treat , NOT CURE, medical diseases with prescription medication...THAT IS ALL!!!

It is just possible that her doctor has not exactly said it quite the way she says he has said it. Chin up. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
Hugs

Her MD said this because my mom had started replacing 2 meals a day with green smoothies! When my mom told her MD this great news and how it was affecting her mood positively, her MD told her she better cut out the fruit in the smoothies because fruit would give her diabetes!
I totally believe my mom, because I have had the same experience with several MD's!

I think we have better doctors over here. They are still not trained enough nutritionally but they are very keen on getting everyone to eat their 5 a day and good albeit largely cooked nutrition is being tackled in some very strange places such as football clubs - it was on the radio yesterday about football clubs removing chips (fries) and burgers from the concessions at the football grounds. One football ground only serves vegetarian foods and salads are starting to gain ground too.
Did your mum's MD really say to stop the fruit but to carry on with the coke, candy bars and crisps (chips)? That's the bit I find hard to fathom.
ps any idea why what we call chips you call fries and what you call chips we call crisps? It's tedious when trying to have a transatlantic conversation.

No, I don't think her MD knows about the coke, chips and candy bars! But I do! My mom has always eat tons of junk food!
Seeing me change inspired her to start with the green smoothies. I wish she hadn't told her MD about the green smoothies!
My mom grew up in an era, I guess, where you feel inclined to tell your authority figures everything. So, when the Nutribullet blender pamphlet said to tell your doctor before starting with the smoothies, she did! Her doctor told her to go ahead and drink as many green vegetables in her smoothies, but to cut out all fruit!

One other thing, my mom is not diabetic, but I am. I told my mom that as a diabetic, I can drink a 1/2 gallon of fresh juiced orange juice and be fine so her adding a 1/2 cup of organic blueberries to her smoothie was not going to cause her any problems. She didn't care what I had to say, but then I am not an authority figure!

I can certainly empathise. I am so sorry you are going through this too.
I think we might at least have a chance at helping the younger generations in our families though. It may help with having to let go of trying to help our parents see the truth if we focus on the kids or younger adults, or those who show the least bit of interest in food cures.

LOL!
If your mum isn't straight with your doctor about her junkfood habit, do you really think she's being completely straight with you about what her doctor may have supposedly said about fruit/green smoothies?
Which do you think she enjoys more? Green smoothies or junk food? (of course you and I know which is better for her, but if she likes the taste of junkfood, and she's built up a habit, over many years, then she's very probably going to prefer the junkfood!)
I suspect there's more to this than you are currently recognising. Again, no disrespect to you whatsoever; I share your enthusiasm for raw foods and disdain for junk food and ignorance surrounding diet in many areas and professions of society.
...but if your mum loves her junkfood then what is the easiest way for her to slip comfortably back into eating it without offending you..?

Isn't it interesting as a culture why we glorify anybody with a white coat on. I don't get it. Put people in an official outfit and we'll believe anything they tell us!

It amazes me that ANY doctor would say that fruit causes diabetes. *rolls eyes* Why would you even go to a doctor who was spewing that kind of stupidity? How can you trust them on ANY diagnosis???
The cause of type 2 diabetes is largely unknown, but genetics and lifestyle clearly play roles. Type 2 diabetes has been linked to obesity, genetic risk factors, and inactivity.

I'm not entirely convinced that any doctor would say that.
-
They would and do. I heard the same sort of garbage as I sat in on my mothers doctor visits with her.

Oh yeah, they do and they also mis-diagnose about 50% of the time. That's why I don't go to them unless I break a large bone .... or something I can't fix.

Docs over here are always promoting fruit and veg.

mine is as well (I'm in Canada)
