We won't be quite off-grid because we will have a little electricity and mains water but we will be building a tree bog and lots and lots of fruit and veg beds.
The piece of land itself needs a lot of clearing but it's 300ft by 60ft and we can keep all the animals we want pretty much.
In theory we move in (such as there is anywhere to move in to) by 31st March ... the work continues ...

Thanks everyone. There will be lots of pics but at the moment I have to make do with phone ones as in the packing I have misplaced my camera battery charger!
The soil is hugely deceptive. There isn't any. There is a smidgen of leaf mold. Under that it is rocks for about 2/3 and the other third is tarmac and rubbish. I haven't shown you the scary-rubbish end yet but I'll ease you in to that gently.
Veggies and fruit will be in row after row after row of raised beds. Eat your heart out John Kohler.
Today we have built a hen house and moved the hens over. They were arranging their straw when I left and making chicken noises. They will be let into their run tomorrow afternoon I hope. The dogs and the cat go tomorrow then it will be just me left packing stuff until my mother arrives on Tuesday to help.
The worst of it all is emptying the house. The rubble and the brambles and no hot water I can take in my stride.Georgina

I live on a main road (for cars, people, bars, restaurants, shops everything) in the city. I thought it was so noisy when I first moved in (and it is really loud, there's music and shouting and cars and all sorts) but I now find the noise really comforting. Like knowing there's lots going on and lot of people around is just nice.
I'm so jealous of the space you have!

My mum's moving into a new house in April! Pretty excited. I'm moving in with her as soon as I can, because of my health I can't afford to stay in the city. I have my eye on the garden potential.

From Clean up to Compost
Congratulations Georgina. How did the chickens overnight. I hope the wildlife left them be.
I see lots of compost material there. You could rent a brush shredder/chipper and convert some of the brush to wood chips for the carbon content for your pile. When ingredients are shred to small bits and in a good ratio, a pile can finish in a fairly short period. If you can burn there and have access to a sealed metal drum you can then make charcoal of larger wood chips, to help build your soils up. I use a fire pit on my patio in the warmer months. A large stock pot was my charcoal factory. I'd make a little each time I enjoyed a fire and cast it across my garden. Don't forget coffee grounds from all the shops. You'll have soil in no time. The nitrogen materials ought not be hard to come by when things bud out.Last edited by streetsurfer; 03-21-2012 at 02:30 PM. Reason: pour spaleing
