    Default Upset Stomach from Sprouts

    Hi everyone!

I recently bought some sprouts from a local farmers market vendor and each time I had a horrible upset stomach.
The first week I thought it was just too strong for my body and the live enzymes were cleaning me out.... but this past week I ate even just a little bit
and it upset my stomach again.

I started reading about contamination of sprouts. Does this sound normal or does it seem like I may have bad sprouts?

    what kind of sprouts?
were they refrigerated at the market or at ambient temps?
if kept in a chiller at the market did you get home quickly with them?
Do have allergies to other foods?
When you say ill, do you mean D & V or something else?

No, I can't say this sounds normal... I've never had upset stomach from sprouts and I currently juice 2 cups of alfalfa & clover in a green drink daily.

If you'd like to give sprouting at home a try - it's very easy and only costs pennies!

thank you all for the replies.
I've thought about doing some sprouting, but figured I'd buy some to see if I like them before taking the time to do it.

Yes, I bought them room temperature from farmers market outside and did not chill them when I got home. I rinsed them with a veggie-fruit wash, but ate some at the
market as well to taste. they were pumpkin seends, and mix of peas and beans...

No V, only D....quite quickly too.

Ohhh - I'm going to jump in. Peas and beans - that would do it for my tummy! Those are very difficult for me to digest. I've tried beans and legumes, raw & sprouted and I just don't care for them.

Pumpkin seeds I can eat (sprouted) with no problem though.

That was really good thinking - to try the sprouts first to see if you liked them before getting supplies to sprout them yourself.

How about sprouts such as alfalfa or clover? Very mild and oh-so-easy!

There are methods of sprouting that are so cheap and easy that I can't see any reason to wait. I got started with a glass jar, a nylon stocking and a rubber band. I was eating very yummy clover and alfalfa sprouts 4 days later. Watch a couple of youtube videos and go buy a few oz. of organic seeds. You won't be sorry!

I love sprouted lentils in my salads. I think they are the reason I'm so gassy lately though. LOL Another vote here for alfalfa. Out of all sprouts I love those the most and they are really easy to sprout in jars.

Yay, MT! I'm glad you're getting a juicer. We have a manual wheatgrass juicer we've been using for lemons, limes and apples and some times baby carrots. It works wonderfully! Eventually I'll be growing some of that 700 lbs of wheat seeds we have sitting around.

Yeah, peas and beans can be a problem for some people because they have undigestable proteins (toxins) that can upset tummies, even soaking beans in a bucket of water for four years isn't enough to break down this protein, even lentils could be a tricky one too, but it could be worth a try. lt would be much more ideal to sprout nuts, sesame seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, alfalfa seeds, and sunflower seeds and have these with greens...preferably sprouted greens.

Well well well...l never thought l would see the day. What happened?

As Kulvinskas once said: "wheatgrass juice is the nectar of rejuvenation, the plasma of youth, the blood of all life. A daily sunlight transfusion".

You'll be glad you started juicing wheatgrass. The effects are very subtle and take a few months to build up, but once you go down that top quality road there will be no going back. Get ready, for your diet is going to get a good kick in the pants with the most top draw of all the foods. lt definitely makes life better. But go easy on it, it will stir you up if you have too much, and you will be laying down for a few hours feeling green to the gills, especially when you first drink it....but boy oh boy, WHAT A SUPER CLEANSER!!! lt also has been proven to kill every virus and bacteria tested, and has been shown to kill every cancer cell known to man. lt is also the best source of the king of nutrients, PHYTOCHEMICALS.

You are in for a major treat MT, my word you are. Hold on tight...you're about to go for a ride...not just a ride, but the Rolls Royce of rides...the ride to end all rides.

I've always wanted one since getting into raw foods but not been able to afford an electric juicer that would juice greens properly but I found a good deal on a manual juicer while I was looking for spiralisers and decided the spiraliser could wait.

Doesn't sound like a food poisoning bug such as e-coli then but buying them at ambient temps is not very sensible.

As others have said, those are a heavy mix. Try sprouting at home with smaller seeds and only try the legumes again when you feel like it. I'm good with mung/aduki and peas but lentils and chickpeas only in small, infrequent amounts.

Hi Georgina ~ I think you'll get greater bang for your buck getting the juicer over the spiralizer! How fun that you've got a new gadget on the way ~ ~

That's what I thought too ... now I will have three juicers! One that does general fruits and veg, one that does citrus and a greens juicer.
