Default First time juicing, for real

So today was my first real attempt at an all vegan day, I had like 3 apples half a bundle of celery, banana, orange and a bottle of carrot juice (which I paid six bucks for) before realizing it was flash pasteurized. Seriously, has there been a single case in history of someone dying of carrot poisoning?

I made it till dinner until I caved but I had some high energy all day long, specially considering I was running errands since ten am (early for me, hey)

So the real corker is I picked up a cheapo juicer at the local thrift store for next to nothing just to get an idea as to what I'm in for before I invest real money.

I put some cucumber, spinach, celery & apple into it and topped it off with some of the carrot juice for taste. The taste was a little off putting at first, but nothing I couldn't work with. Thing I don't understand is 10-15 minutes later my body is sayin: stop drinkin this stuff. I can't even finish what was originally about a cup and a half of juice?

Is this sort of reaction normal? I don't feel sick to my stomach per-se, I had no reaction to large amounts of vegetables by themselves, nor the carrot juice alone. The only variable really is the spinach, but then again, I've eaten massive bowls of raw spinach salad with no problems at all. I love raw spinach.

I'm stumped, perhaps my body is just not ready for this level of un-inhibited vitamin consumption. Is this normal? Also within about 20 minutes I crashed big time, as in I almost passed out in the middle of a conversation with someone.

you caved because you didn't eat enough during the day.

as to the juice, I can't stand cucumber juice. If you left out the cucumber and added a half a lemon, juiced you might find that better. I find about 3/4 pint plenty at one go and don't like it much if I keep it, even in the fridge.

But I love raw cucumber's just the same, does juicing alter something in that respect?

don't know. All I do know is that I love them in crunchy chunks but juiced they make me feel sick as a parrot and they taste horrible (to me).

I've just begun juicing as well, and I am noticing certain fruits or veggies I adore in whole form are sometimes too rich as juice so they have to be toned down a bit in order for me to find them appealing to drink. I too love cucumbers, and the juice has a stronger taste.I At first watermelon juice tasted funny to me, but now I am beginning to love it. I think when the body adjusts to different tastes the more raw you encorporate your palate will develop differently than before. I used to gag at the taste of kale, now I eat whole bunches at a time!

and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind:
and God saw that it was good.

I can eat cucumber, but if it is in a juice it makes me want to gag.

Check out my blog (other than the one on here). I am just getting started, but I promise that it will get better as time goes on!

Hey Rawnie - sorry you had an upsetting first experience - here's a couple thoughts - any greens such as your spinach are just so nutrient rich and cleansing, particularly in an uncooked form, that they alone could have caused stomach problems, even nausea. I'd go easy on the greens in the beginning, then if you like the taste add over time. Also they can be the major cause of a bitter tasting brew! I put just a few greens in my juice and keep tastier ingredients prominent such as carrots if I'm in the mood for sweet or tomatoes if I'm in the mood for salty. Hope that helps.

I agree with Jan. I had to go easy on the greens in the very beginning because I didn't like the way I felt 15 mins. after consuming them juiced with fruits. My theory: the body needs to heal (detox) before you can nourish it with so many phytonutrients, chloryphll, (sp?) and such.

For now, I am high fruit....and on a fruit high!!

    Peace, Bonnie

I had stated something similar on another thread. It could be just one ingredient that ruins the juice. Find a fruit juice that you like and add just one green ingredient and see if you like that. If all ok, then add another green...so on and so on.

I was going to post on the other thread that this is very good advice - I've posted it here instead

Well I gave it another go after watching "Fat, sick and nearly dead" and used that guys recipe as a base. This time I used: green apple, kale, celery, carrots and parsley.

It was miles better than the first one!

I mixed the second cup with some leftover kefir and it was pretty good. I believe that is a good way to preserve this stuff from oxidizing as well, by suspending in either coconut milk or something similar you can prevent rapid deterioration.

I made an awesome juice today from apples, spinach and fennel. I used both the fennel bulb and the stems. It was more delicious than I anticipated.
