Default Cheating but Good Value lettuces

Today I noticed that Lidl had their "living lettuce" on half price. I bought 4 trays which I will get through quite quickly and because they are growing in trays I can take my time a bit.

I trim the leaves off with a knife leaving about an inch of stalk and then water well and plant out into the garden where I will get about 4-6 weeks worth of leaf regrowth.

When I first buy them, the leaves are soft like all commercially grown leaves that then spend time in a shop and often times a dark store room. Once they are in the ground the new leaves come through with a fabulous texture and the flavour improves.

I've only just cleared an area which has had some similar lettuce leaves which my mother gave me well over 2 months ago.

Wow! Great idea! I'm gonna give this a try.

Also, green onions (scallions) can be regrown as well. When you trim the roots just plant them in your garden. I just gently push them into the soil and lightly cover with dirt. Voila! A new green onion grows.

Anyone else have any clever ideas?

    Thanks Mystic.

That is a brilliant idea for the spring onions. I can grow them ok from seed but they take sooooo long to turn into anything worth eating. will definitely give that a try.

I have french beans ready at the moment (and for the forseeable future) and carrot and lots of regular onions to last into the winter .... and various green salady stuff and beetroots

The first tray of lettuce stumps went in yesterday and there is one ready to go in tomorrow. I will take some pictures at some point. One of the ones planted in April has gone to seed so I might try saving it and see what I get :)
