Thread: Hemp Seeds?

  1. #1

    Question Hemp Seeds?

I was in my local health food store today, looking for some seeds to sprout. Their selection was pretty low but I picked up some Chia seeds. The sales girl handed me a bag of hemp seeds. I asked her if they were "sproutable" and she said yes, but they look like they're split or hulled - unlike any hemp seed I've ever seen. I brought them both home and have started soaking them but the hemp seeds are looking really cloudy, unlike the Chia seeds which look like they have a gel bubble around them (excuse my extremely technical term )...so I Googled it and it appears that hemp seeds are illegal in the US (I guess that makes sense, huh). So am I correct in assuming these seeds can't be sprouted? They're delicious just as they are, so I don't to waste any more if they can't be sprouted.

If you're in the US, then no - your hemp seeds cannot be sprouted. And I agree - they're delicious just as they are :)

Perhaps you can toss your wet hemp seeds into a smoothie or dressing (or the like)?

I've never sprouted chia seeds - but put them in pudding all the time. I mean, I know they sprout cuz of the chia pets... *Ü*

Thankfully, I only put few teaspoons of the hemp seeds into the sprouting jar. Hmmmm...blend them into a dressing? Sounds like a plan!

I was a little disappointed in their selection but she explained to me that it was Saturday and they get their shipments on Monday mornings. Looks like I'll be making a trip back out on Monday to see what treasures I can find.

I mostly got the Chia seeds because they were inexpensive and I'm antsy to sprout something and my inner voice was saying "nu-uh, you can't sprout these hemp seeds"

I just put them in smoothies - but if you are consistently eating the sprouts I don't see how the legality would be a problem. Its not like cops are going to be staking out your house because they smell sprouts!

NovemberBlue - Have you thought about sprouting things like alfalfa or clover? Most health food stores carry those. They're so easy and tasty. If you want something with kick, then perhaps broccoli or radish seeds...

I guess if we want to sprout hemp seeds, we'll have to do it while visiting our neighbors to the north - in Canada ;) *Ü*

I went to the store looking for those seeds but they either didn't carry them or they were out. I'm interested to see what they have when I go back tomorrow. There are two Whole Foods stores pretty close by, so I will check there after going to my more local health food store.

The Chia seeds look slimy and disgusting I also pulled some quinoa out of the pantry and decided to sprout it as well.

You'll be real happy with the quinoa! It's the quickest sprouting seed I've ever sprouted. I soak them overnight and they're already sprouting in the soak water. I drain & sprout the next day.

The chia seeds will get slimy - if you want to use them up - here is a FANTASTIC tasting recipe for chia banana pudding - so good.

    Banana Chia Pudding - loveraw

    • 1 cup of coconut milk (process 1 cup shredded coconut with 2 cups of water, press through a nut milk bag).
    • 1 banana
    • 4 tbsp chia seeds
    • 1 tbsp virgin coconut oil, hard but soft enough to scoop up with a spoon.
    • 1 tbsp agave nectar or the sweetener of your choice
    • 1/4 tsp real vanilla
    • 1/2 tsp mesquite

Make the coconut milk and in a food processor, blend it with the rest of the ingredients until smooth. Let the pudding rest in the fridge over night to fully swell!

Deb's note - I would make this all in the blender and then stir in the chia seeds by hand. Can add soaked raisins by hand as well. Can add sliced bananas.

Or if you don't have a coconut - this is another winner!

Gia's Chia Pudding (with Deb's tweaks)

    In high speed blender combine…

    1 c cashews (soaked overnight)
    2 T vanilla extract
    1 T almond extract
4 chopped dates (or 10 smaller dates) soaked, reserve water
    dash of salt
    2 1/2c. water

Blend and pour into a bowl. Add:

    1/2 cup dry chia seeds
When thickened in about an hour - stir in:

1/2 cup raisins (soak, reserve water for above)

Keeps for 3-4 days in the fridge. Can add a little cinnamon, can use coconut water, add a banana - lots of variations

If you're looking for a sprouted quinoa salad - here's a tasty one (and the music's good too!). *Ü*

Oooooh! Thank you so much! Those all sound delicious.

Edited to add - I soaked my quinoa overnight and indeed, some are starting to sprout. This is WAY more fun than cooking - I never liked to cook anyway

You're very welcome DawnD! This was the best chia pudding I've had. The other recipe is the second. I demoed it last month at our raw food meetup & potluck - everyone loved it (the second recipe).

Do you like tapioca? Chia pudding reminds me of tapioca... (yum) *Ü*

Back to add - I'm going to post these 2 recipes separately also. They might not be found here in a hemp seed thread - ha!
