Cat Grass

My dog Lucky is a grazer. He loves to eat grass, but I discourage it on our walks because it because of the chemicals that are sprayed on most lawns and also weeds that could be toxic.

So I grow cat grass for Lucky to graze on after our walks. He loves it, but I need to grow him a fresh batch.

I was looking on Amazon for bulk amounts of cat grass seeds - Is cat grass oat or wheat seeds? Or sweet barley? I see all described as cat grass. (???)

I'm not sure what the current kind is that he has. I got them at Walmart but got such a small amount of seeds for 99 cents each packet ... it feels like there has to be a better way.

Does anyone else plant cat grass? Do you get seeds in bulk? And if so, what kind?

when i used to have cats, i got the cat grass seeds which were a mixture of different cereal grasses such as oat, barley and wheat. some of my cats likes straight wheat grass whereas others turned up their cute little noses at it- they preferred to wait until the mixture of grasses was available to them:)
i'm sure you can buy them in bulk and mix them prior to growing. good luck

Ann Wigmore had written that her pets preferred barley grass. Wheat grass is what they sell at the pet stores here in sprouted little 4" or so packs. Can try that unless you find the ingredients on the packet you have been purchasing--maybe contacting the company for more info.

I guess if I get some oat seeds in bulk and we should be in good shape for a while. And next time I'll try the barley to see how he likes it.

Here is a pic of one of our meowers eating MY wheatgrass. Bad kitty! Well, its HER wheatgrass now, lol! This is just plain old organic hard winter wheat, AKA wheatgrass. This cat loves any grass though, oatgrass or chia is also a hit with her.

Are you feeding your dog lots of fresh healthy things as well?

My dogs get fresh veggies, fruit, green smoothies, etc. I don't notice them eating so much grass now that they're getting lots of fresh stuff.

In the winter I do buy cat grass and snip a few teaspoons into their bowls with their food. They love it.

I also use my leftover pulp from juicing to make a raw treat. I sometimes add green powder to it. They love their treats and they are so good for them.

Are you feeding your dog lots of fresh healthy things as well?

Yes, I feed them The Honest Kitchen which is a great human quality dehydrated food (not technically raw by our definitions, but not cooked to death either). And I supplement one of my dogs with something they make called "Perfect Form" which is for his stomach issues - he's always had soft stools verging on diarrhea. We tried all the premium foods and frozen raw - frozen raw & The Honest Kitchen are the only things that have ever worked for him.

I do give them fruits and veggies from time to time (ones that I verify are not toxic to dogs), but because of Lucky's sensitive stomach, I have to be careful whenever adding anything new to his diet.

He has his own containers of cat grass now and stops for a taste before and after ever walk and it's worked out great for him. He's not as interested iin chewing on the neighbors' chemically treated grass anymore.

ive got a sensitive stomach and love almond milk , or just raw almonds

and my friends sheppards love almonds i feed them

so maybe almonds / almond mylk good for your dog

Ahhh, how cute is that! I have four rescued dogs and one of them has a sensitive belly too. One thing I learned (from trial and error) was that being a medium sized dog - they're all cockers - they didn't need all the protein in most of the kibbles. I try to keep them in the 20%ish range for protein. Most kibbles are in the 30% range which resulted in very soft and often mucus-y poop.

I've got great poop now! I'm glad you found something that finally worked. I spent years trying to find the right balance. I now feed Taste of the Wild with whatever I homecook. It seems to be working. They're all very healthy for older dogs.
