I just got some rice today that I am going to try with and I am probably going to the organic supermarket later today or maybe tomorrow and they have all sorts of sprouty stuff. I'll be keen to see how we each fair with the rice.

I have a whole bowl of mung sprouts and I really am not excited about using them. I also have alflafa sprouts. I guess I am so caught up in my routine that I am not looking for ways to use them. I'll try to incorporate them tomorrow.

    Cool rice sprouts Mr. Raw.

    l do about 15 - 16 hours.

Getting on top of this sproutarian lifestyle has been a major challenge, nearly everything that could go wrong has gone wrong, but l am always very positive and work my way through the challenges. A major mice/rat plague has invaded my town this year and growing the greens on soil (wheatgrass, sunflower seeds etc) has largely been a disaster because 50% of my plants get destroyed by either birds or rats. BUT....l have gotten smarter and built this baby (below) for my new crop to grow 2 or 3 days before l move them to my main growing shelves.

Pea shoots, sunflower seed greens and wheatgrass growing on soil - safe and sound from the nasties

The short term storage area is all covered in wire to keep everything out until the plants grow long enough to discourage the pests from eating the seeds at the bottom of the greens. l was lucky to have actually found this block of shelves down the road, so l just dragged it home with all my energy (saved me hundreds). After a few hours of getting supplies and fixing it to my needs l have now won that battle.

Winter is a tough time for sprouting stuff outside. Many of my beans start to rot easy because they are not germinating as quickly as they could, so this means l need to sprout the beans for a shorter time period, and adzuki has been completely pulled off the menu until the weather gets warmer (adzuki has only had about a .5% sprouting rate during winter, normally it is about 90%). The problem with sprouting for a shorter time period is that l am not getting rid of enough uric acid in the beans, but the peas and lentils are managable. The only solution is to either get a mini greenhouse or to use plastic sprouting trays during the winter.

Other challenges l face is keeping on top of my seeds reserves. l thought l had enough mung beans (10kg) to last 6 months, but after only 3 months my supply is almost out. lt's my most important staple food and have been waiting 6 weeks for a 20 kg sack to see me through, but it hasn't come in yet. Now l need to drive all over town all Saturday and collect small bags to cover me over until l get the bulk supply in. See...adjusting to the lifestyle takes some trial and error at the start and it is hard work. l need to be in touch with all the seed suppliers and know exactly where things stand; l have to know what's in the warehouse, how much stock and know how long it will be in stock so l can make sure future purchases are assured. Sourcing directly from farms and knowing seed inventories takes lots of time to get on top of too.

These are just some of the challenges l am facing. l also need to get a complete new major greens unit built that is much better than my other one. Eventhough l move the 2 - 3 day greens out of the wire box, they still get eaten alittle bit when placed on the major shelving. l need to completely enclose my greens unit and do it professionally. l am currently designing it and it will cost alot of money unfortunately, but l need to save up and get it done.

lt's all step by step. Still lots of work to do before l get on top of this properly.

An old disgarded wheatgrass juicer. lt's been sitting there well over 10 years and hasn't moved. l can use it for spare parts of necessary.

Two bags of soil l bought from the nursery:

l've tried quickly reading FAQ about how to start a blog but i've decided not to bother. l'm still not sure how to do it. Anyway, l am probably better off doing an independent blog. Another thing, l am too busy getting on top of this lifestyle to really have time for doing a proper blog right now. l think after i've been raw a decent amount of time that any blog l write would carry more weight, l haven't done it for long enough to be taken seriously yet.

What an exciting sprout thread!! I'm loving all the info and pix so far! How inspiring.

Here is my radish and fenugreek

    Buckwheat and Wheatgrass

I've been experimenting with sesame seed and adzuki beans lately. So far so good. I'm trying to do sunflower (unhulled) as well...can't seem to find the ones in the shell at any stores around here.

I sprout mine differently...I soak in a bowl for the allotted time then I place in a colander over the same bowl so I can rinse them quickly. So far, I like this method. The smaller seeds I do in a hemp bag.

l love your pictures, so pretty. How long are you sprouting your fenugreek for?

My new sprouting project is Amaranth. Also doing soy beans again.

l also feel confident in locating a bunch of other seeds such as clover and broccoli, l am very excited about that. Been waiting over a week for an answer.

l'll post some more sprouts soon.

Another good source of sprouts is weed seeds from dandelion and lambs quarters and many other things.

This is going to be a good thread to watch over the next few weeks because i'm going to share information about sprouting that is never discussed much and certainly not spoken about online. l'm going to finally try and explain sprouts in much more detail and talk about why they are so good, compare their nutritional values to other vegan foods and explain exactly why sprouts are a potent form of `super fruit'. l may take a few weeks or even over a month to compile this, but l do want to do this. Hopefully this will be the golden jewel of explanations. l'm excited about it and l hope you all are excited too.

Late edit: Even one day do extensive research via science testing on changes that occur during sprouting for all the major seeds and research lots of other stuff to write an ultimate authority on sprouts. lt would take years but l feel l could do this and should do this because the world needs to know about the most important `superfood(s)' the world has on land. The superfoods aren't the stuff everyone usually talk about, it is freshly squeezed grasses and sprouts.

Thanks! I'm proud of my little babies ;) I like to mix seeds together so that particular time I did radish and fenugreek. I think those were sprouting for 2/3 days...I'm really bad at keeping track of soak and harvest times, I kinda just flow with it and watch them....

I'm having a hard time sprouting sesame...I got tired of waiting and just ground them up for a yummy dressing...should I be sprouting the hulled or un-hulled variety? I'm also testing my sunflowers (hulled) to see if they will sprout...HOPING b/c sunflowers are my FAVORITE!
