The sprouted chestnuts are really something else, they are AMAZING!!! They are different to unsprouted nuts in that they:
* aren't messy and get all over the teeth, they are more behaved and keep the mouth much cleaner
* they are extra tasty and taste alive (even choice organic nuts from health food stores feel dead and tasteless in comparison). They are so meaty and tasty that it felt like l was going over to the dark side and eating sea food prepared by a worldclass chef, but much nicer (it's hard to describe). So for people in a transition diet l feel these types of foods are perfect. They don't break up in your mouth....when people said "flesh of the almond" l now know exactly what they mean, not mushy or crunchy, but kinda fleshy in a funny type of way....unique for sure...never had anything like it.
l feel l could develop a habit with sprouted nuts and develop a taste into heavier foods more, so l better watch myself and only have them as a treat a couple of times a week.
l even found a few in my box that had sprouted through their shells.
Definitely worth sprouting nuts, and safe too. Lower in concentrated fats because it's predigested into fatty acids, so l believe more can be eaten safely without the consequences. As close to going over to the dark side as possible, but at the highest level (sprouted nuts = close to dark side, but at highest level. Dehydrated bread = close to going over to dark side, but at lowest level)
l didn't have alot of sprouted nuts tonight, but it would have been easy to do so. l feel the need to eat again so soon. Got to be careful with this.

that is very interesting. I know what a revelation it was when I first had sprouted sunflowers and pumpkin seeds. I can hardly wait to try the chestnuts in the autumn.

Great news mr. raw - I'll be on the look out for those!
My second batch of mungs is ready for today's lunch! Not quite sure about the alfalfas.....they are kind of longish, but I don't see any of the little fresh green leaves yet.....soaked them late sun, so they've been sprouting since sun night....so not quite 3 days.......I'll take along a pack and see what develops by lunch time.....
I find the mung beans amazing.....soak overnight, and they're practically ready by dinnertime! Probably will be when the weather is warmer...
these leafy ones take longer, although I read somewhere that peak nutrition is about 3-5 days sprout time......wondering if I should leave the mungs a little longer to develop?
clover is just starting to break the shells.....chives - nothing.....broccoli and mustard - almost nothing and nothing......so the 3-5 day rule wouldn't work with them....maybe it 3-5 after they start sprouting out the shells.....
Now - to pester mr raw again.....
I'm sprouting in a variety of glass containers......mason jars, storage jars, glasses, glass bowl.....lol....what a hodge podge....but I had one old hemp sprouter bag from eons ago.....do you think this provides enough light protection for the mungs?
soybeans also have the avoid light requirement....I have some of those seeds might try, not that i'm too keen but have them left over from before i decided to avoid soy....so I might try them as certainly sprouted form would be the best....

the onion family take longer to germinate that expected in my experience.

Mung needs 3 - 4 days in warm weather, but sometimes i've even sprouted them for a week.

Never done clover unfortunately. Can't remember about the mustard seeds.

lt's a help, but l think they need even less light.

Hey street surfer! yeah - I was gone for a while I guess.....came back to ask a Q or 2 and got into the groove again.....
how's it going? how's your gardening growing?
Mine is abysmal, I've been blaming the weather, but think I might have soil issues now that I see others are growing better than I.....also rotator cuff tear that prevents alot of work....but still trying...

sorry to hear of your shoulder injury T-bird. Hope it heals well. I suggest arm circles and speed bag work to help support the joint and reduce further injury. make sure it would be ok with your doc though. I have a torn A/C and those help with it and other neck vert spur problems.
I am temporarily out of the chicago area and staying in florida. Have a small pool side container garden but right now my nutrients seem locked up. Have to do a soil test. I suspect ph is off. Seedlings are not wanting to take hold and grow...things like cilantro, tomatillos, thyme. My wife tells me some of our kale overwintered and some others have possibley sprouted from seed that did not sprout last year. Otherwise not much growing at the IL resi, unless I get home early enough to put some stuff in.
I have been sprouting a little more lately and enjoying mung beans again. Certainly not on the scale of Mr. Raw. Great info you've contributed Mr. Raw, Thank you.

I'm sprouting too! hurray for sprouts!
The one thing i've got is kale - about 100 volunteers from last years going to seed.....red russian....delightful! I'll be making kale chips soon! also had some volunteer cilantro that I got a mini bundle from....well 1/2 a mini bundle....this in the unamended bed....that I didn't get too cuz of the injury.
The beds I did amend - I did it wrong....sprouts come up, but just sit there for 5-6 weeks....finally a little something is growing but I see neighbors are far advanced....oh well, next year, right?
Hope your containers are doing well for you!

I have been reading this post and I was wondering what kind of sprouts that I should purchase. I am thinking alfalfa, mung, and I am not sure what else.
Mr. Raw do you just eat them, or do you make salads with them? Also do you suggest not using them in smoothies? That I should just eat them on wraps and salads? I only like simple foods, so I would like to make it as easy as possible. Thanks! Great thread!

mung beans are great in a bowl with a little oil and vinegar or liquid amino on them, or even just lemon juice.

Rice sprouts after 6 - 7 days of growth in col;d weather:

-
I've just order heaps of stuff for additional sprouting - going to try the rice too!
Thanks for the photo encouragement!
