Here's another sprouting method-cotton and hemp bags.
Rottie, I suggest using a colander or strainer over the bowl to keep the sprouts out of the draining water. You can also lay a paper towel in the bowl and remove it after a short period of it collecting the drain water. Air circulation is important around the sprouts as well.
couple other pointers....A tiny fan placed nearby, if the natural air movement in the surrounding area is stifled, will help speed the sprouting process along. Also, do a long enough rinse to lower the temperature of large batch of sprouts....they create heat as they grow. Citric acid (anti-oxidant) can be used in the rinse water now and then to help remove/retard oxidation and spoilage.

I had to look for this thread again. Its really informative.
Ok, my chickpeas that I started in a plastic bowl and covered with an old cloth are now sprouting, they do not have a foul oder at all, they have an odor, but its a pleasant one. The tails are about 1/16th of an inch long and I put them in indirect sunlight. I hope thats what I was supposed to do. NOW ,,,what do I put them with? I know they dont go with fruit smoothies. BUT what else can I put them in? Mash em and put them in my vege sandwich? Do you eat them just like a nut? Can you mix them with nuts and eat like that? Put them in my cucumber, green pepper ,tomato, onion, corn salad? I didnt think they would sprout for me so I didnt think far enough ahead, lol.
Next I want to sprout alfalfa, what do I buy for this? I will have ot go back in the thread and find what Mr Raw wrote about how to do alfalfa. Also, what else can I put in fruit smoothies? I know lentils chickpeas and alfalfa can be sprouted. But what can I sprout and sneak into my smoothies each day? And does anyone now where I can get truly raw nuts? Cashews, walnuts, brazil nuts?
Thank you, Street surfer for you reply!

I find chickpeas quite heavy and don't eat them any more but they are nice in salads or just eaten as they are.
Get some alfalfa seeds for sprouting and soak in a jar for 8-12 hours.
Put a fine mesh/netting/gauze over the jar top, held in place with a rubber band.
Empty then fill and rinse.
Set with the top of the jar angled downwards but not upside down.
rinse twice a day til they are ready to start eating.

Man I didnt have internet access this weekend so I had to patiently wait to read what you posted on the sprouts Mr.Raw! It is quite amazing!! Let me tell you, my lentils were done and WOW! I ate them with my salad for lunch and with some fruit and collards for dinner and this morning have no trouble getting up at 4AM (which has been so difficult for me when I was eating lots of nuts and seeds.) I feel fantastic!!! I immediately started sprouting chickpeas and quinoa. I'm going to post some pictures on my profile page to show you what they looked like. Here are some more questions.
The lentils finished sprouting really quickly! I wasnt sure if they were done or not but they looked totally done. I think it was like 2 days or something so I was going to leave them for another day but then I noticed that a few of the sprouts were starting to turn a bit reddish and their tails were super long so I just decided to taste one and it tasted great!
The alfalfa sprouts LOOK done but they dont look green like what I'm used to seeing them look like. Could you look at the pics and let me know if they are done? They are on their 4th day now.
The Chickpeas (no pics) smell strongly. No tails yet, its been about 2 days! Not sure if I'm doing something wrong.
The quinoa I started sprouting already have tails! I just started sprouting them yesterday. watering 3 times a day. Should I consider them done?
I love your approach to life. I dont know if I'd be able to dedicate that much time on sprouting but the little bit that I've been doing is so theraputic! Its like youre taking care of a living thing! Wait, YOU ARE TAKING CARE OF A LIVING THING! I've been feeling so much love for my sprouts and its been making the meals that much more delicious. I've felt so satisfied yesterday and this is without having had any nuts at all! Another thing that I totally agree with you about Mr.Raw is that when you go out with friends you really dont have to eat and drink alcohol. This is an old paradigm and actually more like an excuse for people to overindulge. The whole purpose is to connect and socialize right? Not to stuff yourself with poisonous foods and drinks. Its funny when people say "You should live life and enjoy yourself!" and I just always want to tell them "why do you think that eating junk and getting drunk is living life and enjoying? youre much more free and living a better life if you can come to the place of enjoying yourself EVEN WITHOUT all of that crap." i appreciate that you wrote that!
Last week one of my classes was having a final party/gathering and everyone brought food. I brought my green smoothie and was just drinking that and eating whatever raw fruits and veggies there were there. It was the first time I truly realized that socialization should not be about eating and getting drunk. It should be about connecting. I didnt even WANT to eat the junk they were eating. I know what I'm doing to my body if I eat that stuff so I'd rather not do it. I've gained a lot more confidence and strength in my raw eating through this form so I thank everyone for being so inspiring!

You need to put it out in indirect sunlight for a day or two (depends on the weather). Also, you only need to rinse sprouts once a day when they are close to being ready.
Make sure you have also removed the hulls. Another key is to make sure the alfalfa sprouts have been all pulled apart while you are removing the hulls before placing in indirect sunlight, this makes the alfalfa almost melt in your mouth. lf you do it this way it won't be as dark green as some of the sprouting books show, but it is a nicer way to eat them.
lf the alfalfa sprouts are all knotted together they will go a darker green, but l feel my way is the best...they can still go quite dark if they get enough indirect sun.
l like to leave mine outside on the varanda or under a tree for the day or for two days in winter.
----------------------
One thing l do find is that fruit contains nothing like the power of sprouted foods. Fruit is way down the list for power foods. Sometimes l try starting out with fruit in the morning and it's like `blah...is that all it's going to do. Meh'. Folks talk about the power of fruit, but l am not seeing it. Same goes with vegies.
When Brian Clement said that the grasses and sprouts were the best land power foods, he wasn't joking. He said weeds is alittle below sprouts and grasses in the hierarchy, but much better than vegetables, l find this true as well. That man sure knows his stuff.
l also find that my day is made much better when l consume kelp. When Brian first said that sprouts, sea vegies and algae were the health foods we should be focusing on l thought he was going too far, but now l know he is spot on. By consuming algae and sea vegies we ensure that we are getting all the finest spectrum of nutrients that the planet has to offer because they have things that land foods such as wheatgrass and sprouts do not have, especially when the soil can't be relied upon for minerals. His work with Chlorella is truely impressive and elevates the diet way above just sprouts and kelp and grasses (l have his research reports on this...had `em for 15 years). l will try chlorella again soon to make the diet complete (pity it's so costly).
l'll get back to the other questions later on.

The lentils and alfalfa look fully grown, just get some indirect sunlight on the alfalfa and it will be completely done. Congratulations on growing great sprouts. l'm really pumped up that your pumped up about this.
The Chickpeas (no pics) smell strongly. No tails yet, its been about 2 days! Not sure if I'm doing something wrong.
Your sprouts are growing quickly so l am assuming you have decent warm weather where you are. Chickpeas can have a mind of their own sometimes and can smell occasionally, but usually l find them very easy to sprout. Throw the seeds out and try again. Soak for 12 hours and try rinsing three times a day (first thing in the morning, soon as you get home in the afternoon/evening and just before bed).
The quinoa I started sprouting already have tails! I just started sprouting them yesterday. watering 3 times a day. Should I consider them done?
They sound like they are done too.

You attitude is truely music to my ears. The biggest time waster is sorting out the split seeds, but if you sort the tricky mixes (the seeds that split alot) before soaking and sort the tricky seeds 12 - 24 hours after the soaking and sprout for a shorter time, this will cut down overall time needed to do the sprouts.
l think it's best to sprout the seeds which are the easiest (the ones which aren't too fussy to maintain), this will cut down time. Anyway, even if you sprouted 50% of your diet (grains, lentils, alfalfa and some beans) you will be doing extremely well and will cut down alot of time. Also try some sea vegetables.
Since going fully into the sprouting my need for nuts has also declined sharply. l often have chia seeds and avocato for my daily fat requirements, but since l am now sprouting my nuts l will be concentrating on these alot in the next few weeks at least.
When l work out how to do a blog and do other stuff here, i'll post a good sprouting guide, lots of pics and talk about why sprouts and water based foods are so good for us. Lots to do and so little time, but l will get around to it. One day i'd like to do a youtube video.

That's why l think they are best blended with grain sprouts and some alfalfa sprouts and lots of rejuvalic. You want the smoothie to be almost a water consistency.

Best to blend the chickpeas and sprout so the tails are alittle longer. Best to blend with greens and sprouted grains and have the smoothie watered down so it is not thick. l would avoid mixing with nuts, it is not a great combination and the health giving effects will be limited.
Next I want to sprout alfalfa, what do I buy for this?
Just an old jar and gauze wire.
Also, what else can I put in fruit smoothies? I know lentils chickpeas and alfalfa can be sprouted. But what can I sprout and sneak into my smoothies each day?
l wouldn't do it, but lots of people have greens in their smoothies. You could try alfalfa, small amounts fenugreek sprouts, cabbage sprouts, broccoli sprouts and other sprouted seeds that make greens. lf you got really bold you could add sunflower greens and buckwheat greens as well.
Since lentils have lots of predigested carbs it might be o.k to mix them with fruit as well, but never chickpeas...they are heavier and don't predigest as well as the other high carb sprouts.
And does anyone now where I can get truly raw nuts? Cashews, walnuts, brazil nuts?
Need to go to people's houses and get them or go directly to farms, that is the only real way to ensure they are raw.

l remember ringing up asking for a small quantity of peas last time and they said "will 2 tonnes be enough, we can just dump them on the driveway". LOL.
The peas have really solved alot of problems and added another valuable food to my rotation. l am very very pleased.
what exactly does "machine dressed" mean?

l would love to know the same thing, seems abit freaky. They are whole peas that are currently sprouting so l am not so concerned now. l will have to ring Charlie and find out....not the easiest man to speak to, but l will anyway.
l've had a good friend locate some sesame seeds for sprouting too. Now THAT is real music to my ears. l'll be riding high now, l can cut nut consumption right down, maybe have nuts once a week.
My nuts still haven't sprouted yet.

what would concern me ... and it did when I first saw the picture ... was that the peas have been dressed with fungicide. Are they intended for use as sprouted food for human consumption?
Sprouted sesame sounds good.

You should definitely do that! I think a lot of people would really appreciate it (the info online isnt all that great on sprouting while your instructions have been very succinct.)
Both the lentils and the alfalfa were delicious! I didnt do the sunlight thing for the alfalfa but they were so crisp and yummy! I've immediately started sprouting another batch youve created a monster Mr.Raw
Something was definitely wrong with the chickpeas. Not sure what happened. Some of them grew really long tails but the majority didnt. I had soaked them for 12 hours and rinsed them 3 times a day, just like you said. They got very soft to the touch. When I took one between my fingers it was very slimy and really soft. I definitely threw them out. They smelled a bit weird
They quinoa turned out so delicious! I've started sprouting more of that too.
you said try sea vegetables. do you mean sprouting sea vegetables?!? Can you do that? If so, how?
Now, I have been sprouting millet. Any specific instructions for that?
So far, its been quinoa, alfalfa and lentils that have been successful. What more can I do?

l'm taking alot less time on my sprouting now...really refining my techniques. Take about 90 minutes a day if l work fast. lf l could purchase an automatic sprouter (they exist) it would be even shorter time.
The evil of wholefood companies in Australia
A certain broker that gets sesame seeds from a farm(s) in Australia heat treats the so called raw seeds so the companies or people who buy from them can't grow the seeds themselves. The farms are all top secret and are protected by privacy laws and the middle man controls everything. l will do further investigation into this, but maybe that's why raw sesame seeds can't be bought in Australia anymore....greedy men controlling the complete market and killing the food in the process to make sure no-one gets a share. Why can't we choose who we buy from? Why do faceless middle men have to mess with our food supply? lt makes me sick.
l am finding the almond market is very similar. There are about 200 almond farmers in Australia, yet no-one can find out where they are because most of them are top secret.
