newbie juicer | alkalizing suggestions
Greetings --
Am currently exploring juicing as a way to supplement my diet in a 'healthy way' -- and am specifically interested in 'alkalizing juices'. Was wondering if people had suggestions on what vegetables to try? I've seen some 'recipes' that are heavily weighted towards cucumber, but I was wondering what else is generally recommended?

Green juice is always good
My favorite green juice is a few handfuls of spinach; a large leaf or two of kale; 4-5 celery stalks; 1 apple and a handful of green grapes if I have them. I'll put in a chunk of cucumber too, if I have it.
I did a sweet veggie juice yesterday that was really great ...
6-8 carrots; 3 celery; 1 sweet red pepper; 1 apple; 1 scallion; 5 mini tomatoes
The onion is what really spices this one up. A clove of garlic would add zing as well. You can always add other veggies if you have them like sweet potato, zucchini, other squash, etc. Adding a slice of beet is nice too.

All of the veggies are alkaline so try different combos. I like carrot juice as a base. You might try getting a copy of Jay Kordichs book or Norman Walkers book on juicing to help out.

My experiences with 'green leafy stuff' (especially kale) are somewhat frustrating at best -- I get so little 'juice' from fairly large quantities of kale that it makes me wonder if its worth the effort. Spinach is a bit better, but only because spinach is a bit 'wetter' than kale (which verges on desiccated). I see kale mentioned/recommended a lot, but I must be missing some magic trick for actually pulling out meaningful amounts of juice. I have a pretty decent juicer (high-end Breville), so I'm hoping that the answer isn't simply 'you need different hardware').

Thanks -- this will sound funny (perhaps), but I am not overly fussed about what it tastes like. I'm more interesting in the nutritional benefits of whats in it (for me, food is fuel. Period. I won't be hosting a cooking show at any point in my future). I can slam down almost anything if I know its good for me. My ideal juice is one that gives me what I need nutritionally -- at this point, I'm particularly interested in alkalizing, and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Thanks, as per my previous reply, I'm interested in 'bang for the buck' -- not taste. Given limited time for the juice prep, I simply want the best combination to achieve a nutritional end -- in my case, something that helps alkalyze, and (second benefit) anti-inflammatory.
I'll look out for the books you mention.

There are different juices to address different body conditions. For example, cabbage is great for the stomach,carrots are good liver detoxifer,while apples are best for cleaning the colon as is ginger. Most veggies have other positive roles as well and complete information is on the web. I like to do a mix, like in the AM I will do fruit like grapefruit,oranges,and pineapple, while in the pm cranberries,carrots,apple,cucumber radishes etc. Tonight I had cauliflower,onion,garlic,cabbage,added to the mix and will frequently add or subtract different veggies. Onions are good for helping the good bacteria in the colon while garlic is good for killing yeast overgrowth and other critters that may be lurking in the body.
