It has been awhile since I made a savory smoothie. I don't remember using ice. I like savory smoothies and soups with a little something left in it to chew on.

    Yes, add ice!

I often add ice to savory smoothies and sometimes not....depends...Cuke/Avo/Dill soup needs to be more chilled than say a tomato/herb...IMHO

Friction is the cause of the heat. It the laws of physics that are responsible for smoothie warming and nothing wrong with VM. :-) Rub your hands together really quickly and you notice that they are warm too...and that is not anywhere near as fast as the VM. LOL

Thanks for responding. Do you use a thermometer to check the temp of your smoothies also? Do you also find that using a VM for smoothies without ice results in mixtures that are at room temp?

No, I have never used a thermometer, but you can use your hand on the side of the container. It all depends on how long you are blending and what you are blending. I think that a lot of it is personal taste both in terms of cold vs. warm and in terms of toleration of particle size. Just monitor with your hand so that it is not hot/ boiling. :-D

I use the VM to do 'cream of corn' soup... In order to get the water/cashew or sun seed "cream" warm, it has to blend for a full minute or more - and that's a small qty. The only thing I ever worry about is the Asain Peanut sauce that I make, starting with soaked almonds. That will get warm, but NOWHERE near cooking temp. I have a laser heat gun so I do keep track of that - and like another poster said: you'd be surprised at how hot 105 feels.

when I do smoothies, I do them as quickly as possible. When they are done... they're done, and usually in way less time than a minute. Try cutting down your time. Like most, I throw in a few frozen somethings at the end cause I like it that way. Personal preference.
