    Default Question about Vitamix HELP

My vitamix is heating my smoothies. I made another smoothie today (spinach, strawbs, bananas, cold water, blueberries). Everything except for the bananas came out of the fridge (and it's a good working fridge). The bananas were "cool-ish" (not warm and not that cool). I blended for 30 seconds at first and of course not everything was blended BUT I did this because I wanted to see if I could get a decent consistency and maintain the temp at 30 seconds. After stopping the blender and trying the smoothie, I continued for 30 seconds. This (the heating) has happened several times except in the past I've blended right through one minute. I made a blended salad (all ingredients straight from the fridge and cold water) and it was too warm for what I thought was a short run.

I've noticed that all of the smoothie recipes in the recipe book call for ice. I have no issues adding ice to my smoothies HOWEVER I want to make sure that my blender isn't cooking my ingredients. I don't know if I should attempt to exchange the blender (maybe it's a prob with the motor) or just add ice to my smoothies.

I should note that I have indeed searched through the forums on this (and another site) and I would like more feedback.

Please share your thoughts because I'm trying to decide what to do. Thank you. :)

The Vita Mix (and I believe Blend Tec as well) will heat things if left running for a couple of minutes. It will actually heat them to steaming if you let it go long enough.

Yes I know that. The VM cookbook says to blend for 1 minute (for those types of smoothies) and when I have done this (no ice) the temp was lukewarm despite most (usu. all) ingredients having come right out of the fridge.

That's how mine come out as well, but I prefer them that way, so I guess I've never thought that much about it. I keep my water and fruit in the fridge, but they still taste room-temperatureish.

If you like them colder, you could add ice, but I'm guessing it's normal, as mine's done that right from the start. Alternatively, you could freeze your fruit and add it frozen.

Yes, that's what I meant. I don't want to send my VM back if there's nothing really wrong with it. Thanks for the feedback.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your blender. :) A minute of blending is enough to get a smoothie warmed up. Cut back on the water and add a couple ice cubes during the last 30 seconds. Or peel your banana and put it in the freezer the night before.

I have a BlendTec but wanted to throw this in - I love blending in frozen blueberries last (after I've pretty much blended everything else up). I like my green smoothies ice cold and this does the trick for me. *Ü*

I think I may try this. Thanks.

I LOVE blueberries. And I have a few more frozen ones left. Thanks.

All of us are in agreement with the same tips. :) It should work for you. I hope it does. :)

Probably a silly question but I should ask (since I read about it on here): Do you (or did you ever) take the temperature of your smoothies? I will use the tips (frozen fruit/ice). I just don't like thinking that I might be cooking my smoothies, you know?

Two more questions: Do you ever make savoury smoothies? If so, do you add ice to yours? Thanks in advance. :)

I keep my hand on the blender so I can feel if it is getting warm. I have an instant read (meat) thermometer that I've used to check the temp of soups, hot cacao drinks, and pie fillings. You would be surprised how hot 105 degrees feels when your raw.
