sore throat after fruit?
Do any of you ever get a sore throat after eating fruit? Today I made a smoothie which only had 1 baby coconut and about a cup of fresh pineapple slices. It tasted delicious, but by the time I was about 1/3 of the way finished with my smoothie, my throat started to burn and hurt. This has happened to me in the past with pineapple (not all the time, but on occasion), so I wasn't entirely surprised. I might have thought my issue was specific to pineapple, but I noticed the same thing has happened a few times in the past (most recently about a month ago) after eating kiwis.
The only connection I can make between the two is that both seem to be somewhat acidic... at least that's how they felt in my throat. Not all pineapples and kiwis feel very acidic to me... only occasionally. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with such fruits giving them a raw, irritated throat. I feel like the top few layers of skin in my throat have been taken off right now.
Thanks so much.
PS~ Sorry I think this should have been posted in the 'Diet - Living Food Discussion' section, rather than 'Recipe - Food Prep'. Oh well.
Hi RKK what you are describing has totataly happened to me before. I think you are absolutely right about the two of those fruits having really potent acids in them. I interpreted the effect as a signal in which my body was saying that I had-had enough pineapple, or say kiwi for the day. When I've had the soreness or the canker like feeling in my mouth, it was due to having to much of the fruit. So, it could be that your bod. just doesn't want that much of whatever fruit causes an irritation to you at the moment.
I think if you're getting this problem consistently, you must reduce the quanity of intake of pineapple now & increase it slowly might be helpful for you.I've never faced such problems while taking any types of foods.
The same happens to me for both pineapple and kiwi, but it's my tongue that's burning and not my throat. Once I kept eating kiwi anyways, and after a while I realized my tongue was bleeding...! i mentioned the story to a person I know and he said it was from the fruit not being ripe enough.
I think it might be that the fruit wasn't ripe enough, or picked too green
reading my mind??:)

(I will get a sore throat after eating tomatoes due to my food allergy to them...but they are soo good!) )
(And there is a 'barrel' affect when you have food allergies that explains why sometimes you can tolerate a certain amount and other times you can't.)
Yep, I'm also mildly allergic to pineapple and kiwis, which is funny because these are my top, favorite fruits! I just try to limit how much of these I eat in one sitting, otherwise my taste buds go bonkers, and my whole mouth hass a canker sore feeling.
It's normal, just watch how much you eat :)

kiwi sore throat with severe stomach pain to follow
[FONT="Garamond"]Enticed by the wonderful aroma of a ripe kiwi, I ate it only to aquire a rough and hard to swallow sore throat. Someone here described it as losing the lining of the esopagus.
About 20 minutes later, severe stomach pains overwhelmed me, making me have to leave work. I had a DananActivia and 3 Yakult culture drinks to aleviate the pain. It worked well overall with only brief intermittent recurrance of pain.
Thanks for the others that related their experiences as it was a relief it wasn't something worse.
Allergies Hx: lobster (not all seafood); lactose; egg yolk; and a host of other general environmental alleriges.
So I am prone to be 'allergic' > raw bananas (though ripe browned plantains lightly seared until brown in olive oil does my dtract very well) and other fruit also upset me...bummer...I don't eat them so I don't know which ones.
Let me know of any suggestions for those with similar circumstances....thank you all..
