    Default A Greenhouse?

It would be super cool to own a greenhouse to grow herbs, fruits, and veggies. So just wondering it anybody has one? it would be really sweet to hear some stuff about it such as how to keep it going, is it worth having one, how much work, the expenses, and whatever is helpful.

I live in an apartment. I have a greenhouse in my bedroom. It's the brightest room so it sits in the corner.

It's four shelves high, I can fit 3 long trays of wheatgrass on each shelf.

I have sprouts growing as well as a few different herbs.

Hub and I have an outside greenhouse. It's actually two kits that we put end to end, so it is 6' wide by 16' deep. We got the kits from Harborfreight. We are getting a hydroponics system set up in it so that we can grow all kinds of goodies in the winter.

That's sweet!! You have your own wheat grass juice bar ready to go. Umm, nice! Sprouts are fun and super delicious for salads.
Sprouting is so much fun. I love doing it that I had to talk about it in my blog! Growing an herb garden one of these days is one of my goals. Raw Herbs is so yum in raw dishes and smoothies. Like rosemary for instance is so good for a salad dressing recipe. I like the idea of starting out with herbs for a greenhouse. They have so much advertisement stuff on t.v. like grow your own tomatoes which could be done on a balcony if you have one.

What kind of herbs and sprouts are you growing. It's sounds good already!!

I like the idea that nothing stops you from having a greenhouse!! :)

I've seen some types of greenhouse that can be put together and such. That's really awesome about getting it set up and have tons of fun growing goodies in the winter time!

There's something really amazing about watching nature grow! Gotta love it!! Brings back good childhood memories of me walking through a veggie garden in the backyard!! :)

I'm gonna have to google hydroponics and see what that means. Sounds like some fancy water something! Well, anyways it sounds really cool.

What types of veggies are that the two of you will be growing? I really think it is a luxury to grow your own veggies and have them really fresh to eat as well!!

    Have fun with nature!!

Mostly I'm doing wheatgrass. Lots of it. :) My girlfriend needs it daily and it's cheaper to grow then to buy.

For sprouts, I have all kinds going. I use sprouting trays. They work really well.

Herbs are a mix of things. I also have Kale and some other cabbage stuff going. It's like growing a house plant, only I get to eat it. :)

We'll primarily grow tomatoes, herbs, lettuces. We've had good luck growing them hydroponically in the past on smaller scale. The nice thing about a greenhouse is it can be shut tight and the vegs are protected from buggies. I'm just starting to sprout things such as lentils and mung beans. I do those in the house. I will probably get some wheat grass growing in the hydroponics so that I can power graze all winter!

Yeah, the link works. It really is a nice set up for the shelves. It'll come in handy for me in the future.

Thanks for letting me know about the sprouting trays working good. There's this teacher in my area that teaches everything about sprouting about every other month. So I might go to his next class.

I hear ya on how's it cost effective to grow your own wheatgrass for sure! That's really nice of you to be growing it for your girlfriend. That is really awesome!

Nice to know that's is like growing a houseplant. I'm sure I can handle that!! :) Yeah, kale is one of my favorite. All I know is that I would eat all of it when I'll grow them in the future!! :)

Power grazing!! *giggling* I totally know what you mean, I'm like that with kale!! Sounds like you have a nice selection going on there, I would be power grazing too!!

Wouldn't it be cool if everyone had a greenhouse? I think it would be! This is definitely motivating me to have a green house sometimes in the future. when I do and it happens, I will always be grateful for having one. So for now, I'll be starting on small scale like herbs and such. Haven't really planned it out yet. How did you do it on a smaller scale with hydroponics? And along with pnj's question, I'm also interested in what kind of a hydroponic set up you have too.

I looked up hydroponic and even saw a NASA photo demonstrating this method. Looks like a really a modern version of gardening. Here's the meaning for others who are reading this thread.

Hydroponics (from the Greek words hydro, water and ponos, labor) is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. Terrestrial plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution only or in an inert medium, such as perlite, gravel, mineral wool, or coconut husk.

Researchers discovered in the 19th century that plants absorb essential mineral nutrients as inorganic ions in water. In natural conditions, soil acts as a mineral nutrient reservoir but the soil itself is not essential to plant growth. When the mineral nutrients in the soil dissolve in water, plant roots are able to absorb them. When the required mineral nutrients are introduced into a plant's water supply artificially, soil is no longer required for the plant to thrive. Almost any terrestrial plant will grow with hydroponics. Hydroponics is also a standard technique in biology research and teaching.

    Cool info!!!
