    Red face Bragg's Liquid Aminos

I want to try one of Alissa's sample recipes posted on the website, and it calls for Bragg's Liquid Aminos. What exactly is it, and is there a substitute for this because I cannot seem to find it in the health stores I've checked so far.

    Thanks! :)

Thanks! I haven't been able to find Nama Shoyu locally yet, but I will keep looking. :)

It's a soy-sauce type of liquid made from soy. See... http://www.bragg.com/products/liquidaminos.html
Cousens doesn't like it (or nama shoyu) because he says soy is difficult for the body to process and that it's likely to be contaminated by non-GMO crops. He also claims it has naturally occuring MSG in it, but a lot of raw eaters use it. He recommends dark miso as a substitute (which is at least partially made from...yes...soy...go figure). I am surprised your health food store doesn't sell Braggs as it's quite popular.

It's very frustrating to find things, and this is actually a very busy health food store. They do have a couple of Bragg's products, but not the liquid aminos. They do have dark miso. Has anyone tried subbing this? Is the taste comparable in recipes?

I can't find young coconuts in my city either. The guy at the Asian Market said "only Toronto". Good grief, that's 2.5 hours away.

    Grrrr.

    Hi Debra :)

Bragg Liquid Amino's is similar to soy sauce in taste, it's technically not raw because it is brewed, but it's packed with enzymes and amino acids, so it's a "living" food. As far as where to get it, I get mine at our local health food store where they have the soy sauce. If yours doesn't have it, I would ask them to start carrying it...although I'm sure if you ask, they probably have it, it's pretty popular. However, if they don't, you might want to try the Bragg's website, I'm not sure what it is exactly, but I'm sure if you google "bragg liquid amino" it'll come up with it. In the mean time, if you want to make the recipes, you could probably substitute with Nama Shoyu.

    Hope I helped!

RawFoodieMom, ask your stores to carry the things you want! I do this all the time and have never been told no.
I asked the produce manager at the main grocery store here in Montana, in a town of 3800 to please get me some young thai coconuts and the next day, he had them for me. He was so pleased and proud!

I have asked numerous healthfood stores to order or carry things for me, and everytime, they did so.
    Ask and you shall receive!

    I am from Ontario, btw.
Best wishes to you on your raw journey!

No way! He ordered young coconuts for you?? That's so awesome, I'm going to start bugging the stores! I did try once. Last week, there was a grand opening of a new store called "Produce Town". I got a little excited thinking they might carry more than the average produce section of the grocery stores, they do have some different types of fruit, etc, but they didn't have ANYTHING orgranic. I asked and they told me their organic stuff was going to be in in a few days. I haven't gone back yet to look. They also have a sign that says something to the effect that if they don't have it ask and they'll get it. I asked "do you ever get any young coconuts in"? She checked some list she had and said "no, sorry we don't have that" and didn't say anything about possibly getting it in for me. frustrating. Maybe cause they just opened and the staff it not trained properly, etc....

I'm not going to give up this easily though, you have inspired me to get tough! LOL! :)

So do you miss Ontario?? :)

Yes! I miss beautiful Ontario and I miss Canada in general. The USA is fun and exciting and splendid, but it IS different. Never knew it with all the many times I visited. But living here, I can feel it.

Anyways, yes, ask, ask, ask away. Maybe they just dont know where to get them, and you could provide a source?

    Good luck!

I've seen lots of recipes that call for Bragg's Liquid Aminos. Is this a necessity or will the recipe work without it?

You can often replace Bragg's with celtic sea salt or Nama Shoyu. Either will work. It's just if you are marinating something you may want to choose the Nama Shoyu for the liquid content or add some water to the recipe if you use the sea salt.
