I'm thinking raw VEGAN. :) My dogs are very tiny and I've read nothing but horror stories of small dogs doing raw meat. Also, I can't handle meat for health reasons.

Your butcher is your friend! Find a bonified butcher, not like in a chain grocery store but an actual butcher. Mine saves me the rib bones and cuts them into individual servings. He also gives me the kidneys for free and my dog loves them. Your butcher will be happy to package up your dog's daily requirements in individual baggies. It will probably cost you a bit but I can't imagine it would cost more than the expensive raw kibble.

Katchmoleen: Thank you for the suggestion! Sadly, where I live, we don't have butchers... we have grocery stores... I looked into that and made phone calls a few months ago when I was considering putting the puppies on the BARF diet, however since then have received many warning signs that BARF will not be do-able (at this time) for my tiny fur babies.

Just putting my 2 cents in. I have been raising cane corsos and have done a ton of research on the biology as well as the proper diet for dogs. Dogs definitely need meat, cats actually need a higher content of meat in their diet..bottom line. Totally different from humans.

I told you about my friend that feeds her dog raw meat.
I was in her house when the snows melted and there was a couple of months of dog poop on the grass and it was snow white. Dogs that are fed their proper diet make white poop because of the bones.

Sport, my dogs eat raw too and love it! I've been making their food ever since they were 12 weeks old when I got them. Mia is 4 I do not brush their teeth. Her teeth are of a dog who is like 1 years old on regular dry dog food. She is in perfect shape and has no white hairs that older dogs get!! Bruno is 2 1/2 and he is in great shape also. I include the bones with the meat but they also get my special veggie/fruit mixture: either yellow squash or zucchini and blueberries. I give them fish oil, alfalfa powder and raw apple cider vinegar on their food as well. :)

Mine too (only babies)... I miss the little furry suckers. I'm on medical leave in a different state right now. Can't wait to go home and be reunited with the fur babies. :)

A vegan diet is not good for dogs. I feed all my pets a raw diet. Bravo! is a good raw food company and you wont have to touch the meat. It comes in a patty and its veggies, organ pieces, bone meal, and meat all blended together. It looks like a veggie burger. Dogs are meant to have a 75% carnivorous diet. I breed dogs and they all get raw food. All of my show dogs and especially my trial dogs thrive on it!! I recommended it to anyone. But they do need that meat!!!

Just like people - all animals are different - and there may be an odd one in the group that can tolerate, or even thrive on a vegan diet. That however is not the norm.

My spouse is a Veterinarian and is very much against vegan diets for a variety of verifiable reasons. Even feeding a raw diet, be sure to follow tried and true guidelines so that your best friend isn't lacking in vital nutrients.

Please don't make your animals into "little people". love them as you do, but do what is best for them.

I have heard and go with it, that it is not kind to withdraw meat from meat eating animals. Hmmm Who knows?

our 10# rottweiler wannabe Buddy is allergic to raisins I used them to train him as he loved to eat them but every time he did he would sneeze like mad. so i researched and discovered raisins are a no no. thankfully i only them for a few days before the cogs fired in my brain. no ill effects and raisins are no longer brought into the house as he will whine for them.
he took a nibble of my banana today. and i am seriously considering putting him on a meat diet, right now he eating beneful dry food, with occasionally a little seizure's once in a while, he enjoys the chicken and lamb. I am worried about feeding him chicken necks as last yr he got a pork back bone from my mom's house and I thought that's ok it's not chicken and wont splinter so I didn't take it away and he chewed and enjoyed it for two days as everytime my dd (his mother) would take it from him and when she was out i'd slip it back to him- well i would put it in a plastic bottle and he'd have to work the bottom off to get to the bone, anyway, it hurt him to much for me to give him bones, then I realized that it was because it was cooked, so when I do our shopping this week for our raw adventure, he will be getting some chicken liver, and chicken necks to try.
