Raw VEGAN Dogs -- anyone here doing this?
Hello all... I was considering feeding my two fur babies (Pomeranian and Poodle puppies) raw following the BARF diet, however I honestly can not stomach or be near raw meat, nor do I want it in my house for my own health reasons.
I was reading about Ani Phyo's dog, and that she feeds a large dog 100% raw vegan foods and it's a health animal.
I know dogs are naturally omnivores, however my puppies seem to prefer carrots, bananas, green smoothies and chopped greens to their Kibbles, and I'm wondering if I would be doing them a service to make their diet at least 75% Raw Vegan.
I need advise. I'm absolutely terrified of doing anything wrong with their diets. I lost a very beloved dog to a very stupid mistake (left him at a "professional kennel" - never again) a year ago and am pretty protective of my two little guys that are left.
I can't find anything solid out there about feeding Dogs primarily raw VEGAN diets... I need help if I'm going to do this "right".

Hello Green Woman!
I'm not a dog owner but a cat owner and feed my cats a vegan diet.
I use this brand: http://store.veganessentials.com/ami...ood-p2246.aspx
They also have vegan kibble for dogs as well: http://www.veganessentials.com/catal...n-dog-food.htm
This brand seems to be very popular for both cats and dogs.
I do believe that it is possible to transition these animals to a vegan diet

I'm thinking raw VEGAN. :) My dogs are very tiny and I've read nothing but horror stories of small dogs doing raw meat. Also, I can't handle meat for health reasons.

Your butcher is your friend! Find a bonified butcher, not like in a chain grocery store but an actual butcher. Mine saves me the rib bones and cuts them into individual servings. He also gives me the kidneys for free and my dog loves them. Your butcher will be happy to package up your dog's daily requirements in individual baggies. It will probably cost you a bit but I can't imagine it would cost more than the expensive raw kibble.

Hmm thanks for this thread! I have been just stepping into this area too! Although I will be taking things much slower as I am still at quite the learning point for myself. I was more so thinkimg of preparing Raw Food at home for my little guy. I am sooo GREEN even to having a dog in my life.
Green Woman, have you checked out Chazhound online? There are some threads for dogs in regards to a Raw Diet...:)

A vegan diet is not good for dogs. I feed all my pets a raw diet. Bravo! is a good raw food company and you wont have to touch the meat. It comes in a patty and its veggies, organ pieces, bone meal, and meat all blended together. It looks like a veggie burger. Dogs are meant to have a 75% carnivorous diet. I breed dogs and they all get raw food. All of my show dogs and especially my trial dogs thrive on it!! I recommended it to anyone. But they do need that meat!!!

I have heard and go with it, that it is not kind to withdraw meat from meat eating animals. Hmmm Who knows?

our 10# rottweiler wannabe Buddy is allergic to raisins I used them to train him as he loved to eat them but every time he did he would sneeze like mad. so i researched and discovered raisins are a no no. thankfully i only them for a few days before the cogs fired in my brain. no ill effects and raisins are no longer brought into the house as he will whine for them.
he took a nibble of my banana today. and i am seriously considering putting him on a meat diet, right now he eating beneful dry food, with occasionally a little seizure's once in a while, he enjoys the chicken and lamb. I am worried about feeding him chicken necks as last yr he got a pork back bone from my mom's house and I thought that's ok it's not chicken and wont splinter so I didn't take it away and he chewed and enjoyed it for two days as everytime my dd (his mother) would take it from him and when she was out i'd slip it back to him- well i would put it in a plastic bottle and he'd have to work the bottom off to get to the bone, anyway, it hurt him to much for me to give him bones, then I realized that it was because it was cooked, so when I do our shopping this week for our raw adventure, he will be getting some chicken liver, and chicken necks to try.

Cooked bones are very bad to eat. I cringe when i think about all the cooked rib bones we used to give our dogs when I was a kid.
Ani Phyo feeds her dog a vegan diet. I don't agree with it, but it may be working for her dog -or it may not be, even if her vet thinks it's ok.
A large portion of veterinarians don't know enough about dog nutrition(like human doctors don't know much about human nutrition)
Some do, but don't always rely on a vet for their nutritional advice. There are quite a few vets who think that feeding raw meat is very dangerous and deadly to our pets. Unless your pet has an immune disorder or problem, that's simply not true.
It's important to do a lot of your own research from many different sources. :)

Beneful is not a good food and can cause serious health problems including seizures due to artificial flavoring and coloring. There are some good quality kibbles if you really have to use one. Check out dogaware.com regarding diet. If having seizures join canine-epilepsy.com for great forum and information on natural alternatives :)

I supplement my Jack Russell's organic dog food with green smoothies - I follow Victoria Boutenko's guidelines for pet smoothies -- my pup loves them!

I really recommend reading the book natural nutrition for dogs and cats by Kymythy R.Schultze.
I read a really interesting link a while back about how we have changed dogs brains and in some almost ruling out the hunting instinct, i found it interesting but it also saddened me deeply.
However I do believe that some of the more smaller tampered with breeds could do okay on a mainly vegan diet than the older breeds. I think the ultimate diet would be barf but a raw vegan or vegetarian would be better than feeding processed food. how about trying vegetarian instead of vegan? raw eggs are brilliant.
To feed a dogs and cats just vegan food with no other option I personally feel is very selfish, not enough 'research' has been done to see in the long term how it can effect them. It is our own choice if we want to be vegan and we have seen and know the health benefits, there is much infomation around.

I feed my Dachshunds raw meat every day. Along with about a tablespoon of mashed up raw veggies/fruit - what they would get when eating an animal. I don't believe in feeding a dog/cat nothing but fruit/veggies. My opinion only
