Can someone do this oxidation test on their Hurom/Omega VRT?

When my friend did apple juice in his Omega 8000 series it turned brown in minutes. I tried making apple juice in my Green Star and after 2 hours on the counter it was still bright yellow.

Could someone please try juicing an apple in their Hurom/Omega VRT and let the juice sit on the counter and see how long before it goes brown?

This would show how fast or slow the juice from the Hurom/Omega VRT oxidizes.

Thanks if anyone can take the time to do this test.

I've sold my Green Star for $350 and am about to buy the Hurom for $330 (I know the Omega has a better warranty reliability but I don't want to support a company that knowingly sold a juicer, the 8000 series, that puts highly toxic melamine into the juice/pulp it makes).

I do not fully understand. Why did you sell your Green Star if you felt that it was good.

Because it's very slow at juicing and very long to clean. I also am back to school and don't have time to spend 25 minutes to make a glass of juice when I can make a glass of juice in 5-10 minutes with the Hurom.

I see your point. My husband has often said to me "can you not get a better juicer than that" and I have to tell him that NO I can not.

A better juicer than what? Which do you have? Virtually everyone I heard that tried both the Green Star and Hurom/Omega VRT have abandoned the Green Star so it really seems to be a better machine.

I'll try to remember to do an apple juice test for you. Think I only have some red and golden delicious right now, and I don't care for them juiced plain ... so when I get some fuji's I'll give it a try.

I don't like plain apple juice either, I find it way too sweet, but you could start your juice with an apple as the first thing in the juicer and just keep an ounce of the pure apple juice aside and then you can continue adding other things to your juice.

Tell me more about Omega KNOWINGLY allowing melamine into juice?! I would suspect the new VRT doesn't, but that you just don't want to support them out of principle? Correct?

About Omega, I remember over 2 years ago when I wanted to replace my crappy Breville juicer with a slow juicer I almost got the Omega 8000 series but then saw several reviews that mentioned the melamine auger gets ground into melamine dust that ends up in the juice and/or pulp. I asked on this forum and most people that checked saw their melamine auger was also getting ground (they could tell from the auger looking scratched/sanded where it turns against the screen). I asked my friend that has the omega and his was also getting ground. I emailed Omega about the problem and they ignored my message. They obviosuly knew of the problem because several years after introducing the Omega 8000 series they updated it to have a stronger auger.

My choice to get the Hurom instead of the Omega is mostly because of this. I also find the Omega VRT to be really ugly and prefer the Hurom's look as well as the fact that it has a handle. On top of that the Hurom was about $30 less and they are really the same juicer with slight design differences.

Is the GE Ultem auger safe?

I've had mine nearly a month now and have been very happy with it, I like it much better than my old Green Star.

I haven't researched the Ultem material but the problem with the Omega's auger is that it gets physically ground into powder that ends up in the juice. The Hurom's auger stays intact and even if it was toxic the juice is only in contact with it for several seconds at most so it's not a problem.

Okay - I juiced some yellow delicious apples in both my Hurom and my Greenstar. I cut the apples in half, and divided them equally between the two machines.

The hurom was a bit pulpier if I only did one apple, but the Greenstar got pulpier the more apples I did because it started to clog up.

It appeared there was more juice from the Hurom, but again, it started out pulpier. Was nice to just drop them in and out came the juice, tho.

As far as oxidation ... I let the glasses of juice sit for 10 minutes. Not a lot of color change the first 3-5 mins, then they both started to darken at virtually the same rate. Could not see any difference from one glass to the other, and they were in identical glasses.

the thing is, the Hurom was SO MUCH EASIER to clean up. I have been using it for a couple of months now, and had forgotten the time involved in cleaning the Greenstar.

I love love love love my hurom juicer.

Note on the browning of the juice I mentioned in the above post .... yellow and red delicious apples tend to brown up quickly ... didn't have any nice hard crisp apples to do this test with. Sorry.

I'm trying to decide between the Hurom and the Super Angel Juicer 5500. One concern I have over the Hurom is the plastic auger. They say it's 8X harder than the old melamine augers, but it's still plastic. The Super Angel Juicer is all stainless steel, but it's more than 2X as expensive as the Hurom. A guy on youtube highly recommended the Super Angel over the Hurom. He had both, and sold his Hurom.

One guy on youtube ran frozen bananas through his Hurom. It looked good, but I wonder if he damaged the screen doing that. He used the coarse screen. He seems to like his Hurom a lot more than his old Green Star.
