    Default I'm a chiropractor and...

have helped 100's of patients over the years with a lower esophagus soft tissue "adjustment". It could be a hiatal hernia (where the stomach lining to varying degrees can "herniate" up into the esophagus) and this can be corrected/symptoms greatly relieved by the treatment to the area. It's pretty gentle and you usually feel relief immediately.
Then, once the symptoms are under control, watch your eating habits. Go raw 100% asap, that helps, also...
    1. eat slowly in a pleasant setting
    2. strengthen your stomach/core muscles- weak muscles can cause the esophageal lining to herniate up
    3. Make sure you are NOT slouching while eating and after- very important to sit up straight.
    4. Don't drink any liquids with your meals
    5. Go for a mild walk for 10 minutes after each meal to move the food down better
    6. Don't stuff yourself. It's better to undereat a bit.

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

When I do not eat well and I get it I take some sodium bicarbonate. It helps a lot but I don't know if its a really good idea. What would you say Lara?

Apple Cider Vinegar helped me get through a long bout of gerd along with eating sauerkraut regularly, and chewing deglycyrrhizinated licorice tablets. Then I learned the heel drop method which was helpful with the hernia.

I have read about the chiropractic technique for hernia and will certainly go have it done if it ever flares back up. I think sleeping on my left side helped a little too as long as I didn't eat too late at night. Inclining my bed never seemed to work for me though.

I don't know much about sodium bicarbonate- but it kind of weirds me out, to tell you the truth.
I'd do a google search on "taking sodium bicarbonate" or something like that and see what comes up...

I had acid reflux for about 1 year before I went raw. I even took the dang purple pill for a little bit AHHHH! Then I went 100% raw & maybe like 4 or 5months into raw it just disappeared!

Lara - its just that it is alkaline to offset the acidity. But I agree its not best to take it the same as I dont think you should just pop Tums for the problem.

Katie - you are so right. If I eat well and mostly raw I do not have the problem. Just when I eat poorly

Someone also mentioned ACV. That used to work for me too. I would put it in GS but didn't like the thought of it on my teeth cause I tend to sip GS over a long period.

I used to have to keep a bottle of tums by my bedside and chew a few every night. Within a few weeks of going 100% raw, I no longer need them. Haven't bought any tums in 6 months. yay!

Aside from, or along with a hernia, gerd can be caused by not enough stomach acid being produced. Then the digestion in the stomach is incomplete and the digestive gas that signals the esophageal sphincter to close tightly are not adequate enough to accomplish that. Supplementing Hydrochloric acid in that situation could help and this also does what the acv is doing-adding more acid to complete the digestioins to the point the signal to the sphincter is stronger helping close it tighter. You can easily home test to see if it is due to low acid by trying ACV or HCL supplements when experiencing reflux and seeing if it helps.

Hi, I'm trying like crazy to "introduce myself" because I'm new to this and have clicked all over the place. This is the first time I've gotten someplace where I can post a message. Could you helop me so I can get started? Have had GERD for years and am 2 different meds for it. I find that when I eat correctly, I'm OK.:):)

I guess that is a good reason that taking bicarb or Tums is not a good idea. Thanks.

I try to always be aware of what I'm eating. This way, if it happens I can do a process of elemination for what caused it. I cannot juice/smoothie collard or turnip greens.
