    Default wheatgrass in Vitamix

Is it alright to include wheatgrass (not just wheatgrass juice) in my smoothies using my Vitamix blender?

I remember I read somewhere that wheatgrass fiber is too rough for human consumption and that is why it has to be juiced. But, in some supergreens supplements, wheatgrass (not wheatgrass juice) is listed as an ingredient. So I am assuming that when wheatgrass is thoroughly processed (such as by Vitamix blenders in green smoothies) it should be OK for consumption. What do you think?

I don't like to juice wheatgrass. Too much trouble. It will be nice if I can just throw some wheatgrass into my smoothies.

    Default Dont eat the fiber!

You can actually juice wheat grass very well in a VM. But yes do not consume the fiber.

Put your WG in the blender with a touch of water and blend whilst using your tamper. Put resulting mush in a strainer bag and strain. Toss fiber and return juice to blender add whatever further ingredients of your choosing!

Cows have TWO stomach's to process fiber we don't!

    Cheers,

Well... try it. I doubt anybody here who tells you not to do it has tried it. Adding a small amount doesn't seem like it could hurt, and if it does it'll most likely be a little stomach discomfort that'll pass and then ya move on. Wheatgrass juice is merely the popularly preferred way of consumption, not the rawlaw. lawl.

Including the fiber is like eating hair! I find it strains VERY easily through a regular strainer. Because it's hairlike, if you use a strainer with the larger holes, it will strain out, but yet, you'll get the fiber from other greens etc. Really easy/quick.

When comsuming dry wheatgrass --like the supplements ---it's in powder form. It's better than nothing, but is just not the same as the vibrant living stuff. I wonder how they make the powdered stuff? Is it actual grass dried and ground to a powder, or is it just the juice? I always assumed it was the actual grass.

Mind you, I don't particularly like wheatgrass plain --I mix it with stuff too. My kids will drink it when mixed too. Today I made us all apple/carrot/grass juice. I used a Samson Juicer and did run it through a nutmilk bag. Daughter had three helpings!

Actually I used to throw a handful of wheatgrass into my green smoothies and I never felt discomfort. I stopped doing that only after I read "warnings" against taking the whole grass. I was then concerned that the grass fibers might accumulate somewhere inside me and would someday cause a block in my intestines. I guess if I never felt any discomfort that would mean it is actually fine (with me at least) to take wheatgrass this way? What do you ladies think?

    Talking Wheatgrass chewing gum!

I have a friend that says the following. Having to stay away from gluten I'm still a little to afraid to try it but, for what it is worth...

I use wheatgrass as a daily tonic. I clip a handful and chew on it in the morning and the evening. It is just that simple. It actually makes a great, long lasting chewing gum! So I grow a small tray daily for tonic, and I have extra available during the day to control my appetite. Just to make it perfectly clear, like chewing gum, do not swallow the grass after chewing it, just chew it like gum and dispose of the 'gum wad' when it looses it's flavor!

Like EPPP suggested, I too juice mine as she outlined in her post, using my BlendTec. Then I portion it out and freeze it. Not as ideal as having it fresh every day, but it's what I do. *Ü*

Lan, I'm sure you know that there is no gluten in the wheatgrass.....why are you afraid?

Whatgrass chewing gum....LOVE IT...Maybe you could add a few mint leaves? LOL

DebB...We do what we gotta do....at least you're getting it in more often by freezing it. I look at it the same way you do....

Hey all, I just planted most of my garden that's not being used in hard winter wheat. Next spring, I'll have wheatgrass coming out my ears. I did the same last year with only a portion of my garden though. Invited a bunch of people to come and cut some, but only two came. Maybe this yr, I'll announce it on rawfood meetup!

I also recently did an experiment growing oatgrass, kamut, barley and wheatgrass and brought the trays to a raw food retreat/class with Eva Rawposa---we all agreed the kamut was the best tasting - sweetest. When you just pick the grass and taste them, it also was the tastiest!
