Default How Can You Tell if a Persimmon is Ripe?

Persimmons are not available in the stores here in Montana, so I got a few through the Azure Standard truck just for fun.

I picked out the reddest softest one and took a bite and it sucked all the moisture right out of my mouth. So obviously we are letting them ripen some more. But how do you know when a persimmon is ripe? It was already red and soft.

I got Fuyu persimmons in the CSA box the past two weeks. The flyer that came with says "they are crisp like an apple and will stay firm 2-3 weeks at room temperature. A squeeze of lime perks up their flavor even more. Many people feel it is sweeter at the softer stage, so it has a long useable time."

Mine are not red, they are bright orange. The first batch I let soften until I could see the fruit under the skin starting to darken. They were very sweet. This second batch is taking longer. It's been a week and still hard as apples.

I copped some persimmons and read on a website that they're Hachiya (check the pic), and they are analogous to a water balloon when ripe. So I let them get pretty near water balloon soft and they were delicious, like tomatomangoes or some'n.

Here in you will find your answer.

If you used the banana just with the search term persimmon, you'd have found this info plus more.

I've known Three Persimmions, one I grew up with that was SMALL, Hard and Bitter as heck if they were not soft. They were not shaped like the Hachiyas. Then there is the Hachiyas which is the one you have and they are well worth the wait to rippen. They are like Candy without a Wrapper or a Wrapper you can eat. Then there's the Fuyu.

I'm sure there's Many more but I'd say none Better than the Hachiyas, that is in My World.

yeah the ones that suck the water out of your mouth, def wait till they get super-soft. then they just taste like sugar. im dehydrating some right now, wondering if i can get them dehydrated enough to grind up into a powder to use as sweetner lol

LOL at DRA, the water balloon analogy was the most helpful, and now I know what a deliciously sweet persimmon tastes like. AND I found a place in my town that sells them! They are going to be a once in awhile treat from now on (at $4 a pound! ).

Hmmm, they had them at Costco yesterday but I didn't buy them because I was too scared to buy a case and not know what to do with them.
So thanks for starting this thread, I think I will buy them when I am there next weekend again.
