Sesame seed milk
Fact is, when i make it, it isn't that tasty as i find a very strong after taste--are my seeds from the store rancid or is that normal?? I tried adding dates and a banana and that helped a bit...any suggestions??

Do you also dislike the taste of sesame seeds? If so, maybe sesame just isn't a palatable taste for you.
On the other hand, I make sesame milk a lot, and it only has a slight aftertaste. If your aftertaste is really strong, you may indeed have bad seeds.

Actually, i do generally like them, so maybe it is the seeds--i know rancid nuts are horrible and i am new to drinking it so i will buy some more seeds today and try them--but maybe with just seeds it is just too much for me. Do i need to worry about calcium then or are the veggies enough for that? Thanks!!

Your veggies (especially green leafies) are plenty if you can't do the sesame seed milk.
Also, I don't know if you'd have the same aftertaste with it, but try tahini milk. I've acquired a taste for tahini in my smoothies, but sometimes will make "milk" with tahini, water and banana (maybe a date or two added if I want it a little sweeter). This is what I pour over my grawnola cereal and eat with a spoon sometimes...yummy!
If you don't like that, you can use tahini to make salad dressing or veggie dip (tahini, water, a little olive oil, garlic, sea salt and other seasonings of your choice). These can give you a calcium boost as well instead of the sesame milk and in addition to your veggies and fruit!

Generally, I don't add anything to my sesame milk. I've tried making smoothies with bananas, and I've added agave nectar, but I really like the taste of plain sesame milk, especially if it's ice cold (even though I know it's better to drink things at room temperature.) Somehow sesame milk is a comfort food for me.

I'm not sure if just veggies gives you enough calcium or not. Below is a calcium chart I got from another message board. Hope it helps. Also, have you ever been to www.fitday.com ? I've heard you can measure your daily nutrients by plugging in everything you eat into their program. I've been meaning to do it.

I often make almond-sesame milk, which is really good. And today I was out of almonds so I made walnut-pine nut-sesame milk!

Thanks Cherimoya for the chart! Rawkin, I am not fond of tahini but am working on it! I think i will try vegbaby's idea and do half and half with almonds as i like the almond milk. Thanks ya'all!! And yes Cher. that is an awesome pic. Very cheery!

it is not just you and it is not your seeds. the first time or two that i tried sesame milk i just could not get it down...even with lots of honey. it was just plain bitter. and, my seeds were fresh. and, i like sesame in other things. but, the milk can have a bitter aftertaste. i think people that like sesame milk are the people that in their former SAD diet life also drank coffee and diet sodas :) (BLEK!). i think those have a terrible aftertaste as well.
i was really upset about this too b/c i know it has lots of calcium and that is esp good for curing a sweet tooth, not to mention that seed milk is cheaper than nut milk.
finally i read on another raw forum that suggested carob. THAT MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD. First of all, make sure you soak the seeds for about 4-6 hrs, but not more than about 8 hrs at most (then they do get bitter). I use a ratio of one cup of seeds (pre soaked measurement) to 5 cups water, blend with a pinch of sea salt and 2-3 TBL of honey and 1/4-1/3 cup raw carob. at first, i could still taste a slight aftertaste, but, the more i drank it, the more i liked it and got used to the taste. so, try that before you give up entirely on sesame milk.
