Pilates will certainly strengthen the core and tighten the entire abdominal region. Depending on a person's body fat level and how much fat has collected around the abs, you still may not lose belly fat doing Pilates. You still may need to do enough aerobics to reduce the overall bodyfat percentage.

Cardio and what you eat will change your belly - Pilates thrown in there is a definitely plus in strength and tone - but Pilates on it's own will not take care of it all.

When I lost a lot of wt b4, I did yoga-pilates-rode a bike daily. My tummy was very flat & tight. I bought a 'trainer' for my regular bike like the cyclist use. It's cheaper than buying a in house bike & you have one less bike.

It's so nice to see so much sound advice on here.

They always say that 80 percent of a six pack is built in the kitchen not the gym. The ONLY way to get rid of a belly is to reduce your overall body fat. And that's mostly through diet but greatly helped by fitness. There is not one single sport that can target the fat of just one particular area. But any exercise can burn calories. You can tone up the muscles with pilates - its has loads of benefits, but if there is a layer of fat covering your muscle, you won't see the results.
Obviously aerobic exercise like running, walking, step, cycling etc burns calories quicker than yoga or pilates (although Bikram yoga burns a higher amount than most I believe?)

Also important is to build muscle and not to be scared of weight training. The more muscle you have the faster your metabolism is and the more efficient your body becomes at burning fat. For quick results, best is to combine Pilates with some aerobic exercise and a little weight training - its almost impossible get big and bulky if you are a woman unless you are chugging protein powders or taking steroids.

I don't know how much you work out but don't be overwhelmed... just start small and set targets. Failing to plan is planning to fail!

I love the Barr Method workout. I'm sore in places I didn't know I had. It kicks butt for sure.

Whole Body Vibration I think because it not only works your abs and boost metabolism, but it actually reduces cortisol by up to 30% and cortisol is what can cause your body to hold onto that "belly fat."
Here is the site on whole body vibration for weight loss:

Mizmoo is dead on, so I won't rehash that.

A couple suggestions that have helped me: wrap yourself with a neoprene waist wrap (Walmart $5) and then wear a nice weightlifting belt snugly on top of it when you do any cardio or weights. You will pour sweat and it will help shrink the waist tremendously. I also wear mine to sleep in. (The wrap, not the belt!)

A miracle-worker is the 'Squeem'. www.squeem.net. I am competing in fitness competitions, and my coach requires me to wear one 8 hours per day. SOOOO worth it! No joke: I lost 3 inches on my waist in the first 30 days (of course combined with an insane exercise program and strict diet, but I had never been able to get my waist any smaller before), plus it has helped me with back pain that I have lived with for years, thanks to a horse falling on me. It really supports the back, and it gives you a Barbie figure instantly. I got mine off Ebay and saved about $10. I have the cotton/latex version, and it works well.

    Start 'Squeeming'!
