    Default juice and exercise

hi im new to this and was thinking of just eating healthy, but have considered doing a juice fast to totally clean my body and them go on to eat well.

can anyone tell me how long is healthy to do a fast for, ive read that most last for 30 days, has anyone done it for longer?
also can you exercise while doing a juice fast?
also what about my skin? ive read you can loose up to 30/40lbs doing a juice fast, will i be left with excess skin because the weight loss is rapid?

thank you to anyone who can help me with my concerns, im planning to start my fast tomorrow with a celery blood cleaner of celery, apple and beetroot.
also on the fast can you have herbal tea?
and can you add wheatgrass to your juices?

once again thanks for any help.

    much appreciated, sue

    Hi Sue,

A juice fast is an excellent idea! Yes, many people have done it for as long as 40 days. I did it for 30 days. Yes, you will lose ALOT of weight. It is very healthy. I have not heard of people who have done it experienceing loose skin. I didn't. But I didn't have that much to lose to begin with. It will clean your digestive tract in a wonderful way and give you an excellent start to a raw or mostly raw diet. There are a couple of places you can check out to find others who have done it and read about their experiences, one is www.juicefasting.org and another is www.rawfoodchat.com (and looking up fasting). In fact, I am on day 2 of a short, 7-day juice fast now. I did a 30 day juice fast in September. I feel great! I hope this helps you.

    Peace.

Hi Susan and Welcome! Todd seems to be the king of fasting around here and has great advice! A bunch of us just completed a 5-7 day juice fast right here on the boards--it was great! I have done 2 orange juice fasts now and felt great. Just know the first 3 days are the hardest as the simple habit of eating needs to be halted. Should at least walk every day to circulate all the toxins out--something i have read! You can do it and will feel wonderful!

    Hi Corky,

Well done to you, do you fast regularly then?

    LOL Corky,

I am certainly not the king of fasting around here! How did your fast go last week? Did you break it well? I am on day 2 now, I am just making sure I am full. The breakthru day is Wednesday which will be day 4. Having to find places to relieve oneself is interesting..lol

    Peace.

Well, anyone who fasts 30 days in my books is 'king'!! And to fast one day weekly with the occassional week fasts, you have great self discipline and i really admire that! Good for you, and all the best on this one. I came off with fruit on friday and fruit sat until supper when i ate a little heavier. I am going to try the weekly one day fast you do--starting tomorrow! Just a water fast for the one day and then will pick up again. You are definitely an inspiration. Thanks Todd!

Susan, i am new to all this and would like to start fasting regularly. From what i have learnt from the boards, if you juice fast with a variety of juices then it is still OK to workout, but just see how your body feels. I have done orange juice fasts and on those was told to just walk and not jog or push it too much. Sleep more if necessary and just don't expect too much from yourself. After the fast, you can resume full throttle!!

I am wondering how you prevent muscle loss when you do a long fast?

    Hi GW,

I think the muscle loss depends upon what your muscles are made up of. What I mean is, if you have been built up on animal proteins, you will lose muscle mass by just being raw and quickly on a fast as your body cleanses itself of this. Then you will slowly rebuild on fruit, nuts, seeds and veggies. I haven't lost any muscle mass during the last 6 months. During that time I have done One 14 day orange juice fast, One 30 day juice fast (fruit and veggie) and now I am on day 3 of a 7 day juice fast. In between I have done water fasts each monday for about the last 6 weeks. In all I have lost about 20lbs (all fat). I weigh about 191lbs now. I was a vegan for 5 years prior to doing raw so I didn't have alot of muscle built on animal protein. So all in all, it depends on what your muscle is now made of and even if you do lose muscle now, you will gain it back as you continue to work out.

    Thanks Todd,
I have been a vegetarian for the past 13 years and so I don't think that I have any animal proteins in there ;) My main concern is that when I went raw, I lost so much muscle, that I am just afraid that I will lose more when I fast. I think that the best is to just start w/ short fasts??? What do think???

    Hmmm GoingRaw,

Perhaps short fasts are the answer. I would also assume alot depends upon body-type. I am more big boned to begin with so maybe I wouldn't lose as much weight. I am just finding my body getting more muscular and tighter, which I like (my wife does also!).
