Welcome Robyn!
Glad to have you here. :) Over all detox will gradually happen as you become more and more raw foods. Alissa and the others can address this more than I, still new to it myself.

detox...
i'm interested in what things one does to propogate detox. i've read some of the posts (i.e. 40 day water fast, etc.), but are they active or intentional steps one takes to "do" detox?
thanks for yall's help!

curtis,
did you read stuff that enabled you to know what steps to take for detox?

Hi Baptistnomad,
Once you start incorporating raw foods into your diet, your body will start to repair itself and flush out the toxins. Some people get severe detox symptoms like horrible headaches, flu, colds, etc. Some get mild symptoms, a few zits, maybe a mild headache. And some people say they don't feel anything. It depends on how bad your body is, how many years you ate S.A.D. (Standard American Diet), what the stress level is in your life, if you're getting fresh air, some natural sun, exercise, rest, etc.
The strength of the detox would also depend on if you transition slowly to raw (less noticable detox symptoms), or if you do 100% raw overnight. A water fast would probably bring on the strongest detox symptoms.
Just know when you eat raw, your body will repair itself and clean out any toxins you have.

Welcome Robyn!
Well, I don't think that "detox" should be the focus...but rather getting well, creating a healthy environment in your body; although "cleaning house" is really the same as "detox" and yes, I guess one could DESIRE to pursue that! LOL!
Anyway, sorry for the short ramble...but anytime you STOP giving the body things it doesn't need, can't use or things that harm it and begin giving it things it DOES need, CAN use or can HELP it, then you may expect symptoms of detox. But the thing is, not everyone does (so I've heard)...but most do.
Fasting...TRUE fasting (water fasting) allows the body to stop needing to focus energy on digesting and focus it on clearing out toxins, healing ailments, etc.
Juice fasting can accomplish the same thing but not as quickly (I believe) as when you only give the body water and the body relies SOLELY on your nutrient reserves.
Even eating all raw foods (especially simple fruits and veggies) will bring on detoxification but at an even slower rate than juice or true(water) fasting does.
So basically, if you want your body to begin cleaning itself, ridding itself of toxins, healing itself...create the environment for it to do so by no longer giving it the things that caused the toxins to abode within you in the first place and begin giving it raw, living foods or do a fast.
I'm sure others will chime in with more, but that's my lil ole $0.02! :)

Hello Robyn,
I like what Rawkinlocs said. Detox will happen naturally as you deny your body the junk its used to getting for nutrition. The level and severity depend on all the factors Rawkinlocs mentioned. The intensity depends on you. If you are eating mostly raw and some cooked (say 75/25) you will experience it over a long period of time (like more than a year from what I have read). If you eat all raw completely (100%), then it will be a shorter time but more intense. If you fast on juices (I did it for 14 days in May then for 30 days in Aug-Sept) you will experience another level of detox. The most intense and thorough would be a water fast. Its also the hardest to complete because of the toxins in the body. Some people do try to rush thru the detox process, but I have found one must let it happen naturally at the direction of the body. I hope this helps you.
Peace.

wow! everyone's narrative is quite compelling!! thanks for your help! i certainly don't want to deprive my body of nutrients it needs, but i also do not want to prolong going raw. would alissa's book be helpful in transitioning from vegetarian/vegan to the raw life and also the issue of detox?
thanks again,
robyn

Hi there Robyn-
I'm new to this life style and left the 'ADKINS' diet because I felt awful all the time! Now I don't eat meat at all, and I'm eating about 95% raw at the moment. Anyway, I have a ton of toxins to get rid of plus about 25 pounds to lose... My first few weeks RAW were draining. I felt so tired and I couldn't really concentrate. I didn't have headaches, but I had body aches like you get with the flu. And going to the bathroom was a whole new expierence, (everyone here knows what I mean ) It was a little sadding, because my husband saw how tired I was and he'd say things like, 'eat some meat, get some energy.' It made it difficult to continue, but my first day going RAW before the detox effects started, I was up at 4 am on the treadmil, and my body was buzzing! That's what I want again! And that feeling is my modivation- it is absoulty amazing!
Good luck and welcome!
