Talking Recipe Challenge - Mortal Sin

    Hi guys,

I just had a fun idea. How about we do recipe challenges here on Raw Food Talk? How it would work is someone proposes a SAD recipe that they love and that is gourmet and would work for people who eat SAD, but convert it to raw vegan. Now the proof of pudding (pun intended) is the pictures. So people presentation is important. Everyone gets to vote on who's picture and recipe is the best. To send in your votes my email address is: galadrielle221@yahoo.com.au. All you have to do is try the person's recipe, see how it worked out, photograph your results, give it a score out of 10, and email me with this info.

The person whose recipe and presentation gets the most votes wins, and as the winner gets to choose the next recipe challenge. How does that sound to you guys?

So I'll start. The subject of this recipe challenge is:Mortal Sin.
Now I know we have some fantastic raw dessert chefs on this board and others. So spread the word around.

    Mortal Sin:

    Mortal Sin Cake

Baked cheesecake layer on a chocolate biscuit crumb base
then a layer of Chocolate Mousse, and topped with a smooth caramel cream.

So let me know if you guys are game to do this. If everyone agrees then I'll set a deadline for votes.I'll also let you know when I'll be announcing the winner.

    Oh yes!!!!

I've been waiting for something like this! Sounds like a fabbo idea and I'd be up for the challenge!

What's the timeline? I'd need at least a couple of weeks as I only get a few days opportunity a week.

Haven't even looked at the pic yet, but I''ll be the first entrant!

Wink How about the Deadline for votes is the 4th of July

    Hi Klomasius,

How about the deadline is the 4th of July, that means for Americans - Independence Day. So if we all get cracking now - that means we should have some fantastic versions of Mortal Sin cake for Memorial day and for independence day!!!!

So let the games begin! Who else is up for this?

    Carla

NB: I'm not going to spam anyones email.I will discard your email, once the votes are all counted.

    I'd love to join in!

And i just had the best idea for those of us who don't have a lot of money: have your (culinary open-minded) friends sponsor you with a few bucks, so you'll be able to get the ingredients! I'm gonna ask my family and friends to help me, and in return they'll have a piece of the (hopefully) fab result!

I did this some time ago with a Jerk Chicken recipe. I made the original Jerk Chicken Recipe for my DH and had some marinade left over, so I made Jerk Portabella Mushrooms for myself!!!! SOOOOO Delicious!!!!

    Default Thanks

    Hi Renee H,

Thanks for the picture and your post. Do you think you could post a raw recipe for the Jerk Portabellas?

I would everyone's opinion? Is a raw vegan version of mortal sin, too expensive to make?

What I would like everyone to try to do is make a raw vegan version of mortal sin cake

Good Lord!! (no pun intended) That looks like an amazing cake! And I love the name, Mortal Sin ;) This weekend I'm making Sweet Gratitude's Pecan turtle cheesecake with similar flavors! (I'm commited since I already purchased the ingredients) But perhaps next weekend? I'll have to show this to my husband.

    What a super idea!!
    Kindest Regards,
    Joyce :)

After taking another peak, I think this is very feasible. It just might take patience as each layer would have to be frozen a bit so you could pour the next layer on top. I'd use your favorite almond crust for the bottom. Then use a good plain cheesecake recipe (like Ani Phyo's 'Real Cheezecake' recipe). For the chocolate mousse, I might use Heathy Paces' recipe (in her e-book, Just desserts). And for the caramel cream, Carmella has a few recipes as well as the caramel topping for the Turtle Pecan Cheesecake in Sweet Gratitude. Although it might be darker in color from the photo. So how's that for a start! The possibilites are endless.

I'm a big sweet tooth so this sounds very fun!!!

    Default Hi Joyce

    Hi Joyce,

Love the suggestions. Since you are a very talented raw pastry chef ;) , how about you join in when you can, you have till July 4th, and come up with a recipe, photograph the results, and post them here.

Ok I changed my mind on the prize, for the prize the winner will get a postcard from Australia and also get to pick the next recipe challenge. How does that sound?

    Default I'm adding a prize.

    HI guys and gals,

For the first prize I've decided to give a charm bracelet made with my own two little hands. LOL.

For second prize I will send a postcard with an iconic scene from Sydney Australia on it.

So people please join in the spirit of fun and good eating and show us all what great rawkin chefs you are.

You have till July 4th to enter your raw vegan version of Mortal Sin cake. Post the recipes and the photos. After July 4th voting begins, and everyone here is welcome to vote by sending me an email telling me whose recipe you tried, what your impressions were, photograph your results, and give me a score overall out of 10 for the recipe version that you chose.

It's really not that hard, and it should be fun. Plus the prizes are neat!!!;)

    Exclamation First Prize

So ladies and gents, I am a bit disappointed with the rawies here, how come so far I've only had 3 entries to this recipe challenge? T-h-r-e-e!!! Glimr, Lucy, all you rawkin raw dessert chefs, don't fail me now.

To let you know I am busy working on the charm bracelet, in fact it should be finished in 1 week at which time I will photograph the finished bracelet which is the first prize in this challenge, and upload it.

So come on in the spirit of healthy raw competition and remember the deadline for entries is Independence Day - July 4th 2009, send me your entries. Post them on this thread for all to see and drool over.

    Voting begins July 5th.

Hi Carla, I haven't forgotten. I probably won't give this a try until sometime in June. We made the turtle pecan cheesecake this past weekend. While it was a super luscious and amazing dessert, I think both my husband and I are a little burnt out at the moment. This weekend I"m making a nice simple pineapple cake from Ani's new dessert book. I think after a few simple recipes with more fresh fruit, we'll be ready to takle the rich chocolate and caramel desserts again :)

    Cheers

If my budget allows I might do this for my twin for a birthday treat (which would be 100% greater than his usual birthday feasting). Here's my one catch... I'd have to do this dessert and call it "Simply Divine" because I don't like the idea of eating a mortal sin;)

I'll check in again soon and let you know either way... I don't do a lot of fancy preparing of foods but always find inspiration and joy just by looking at the lovely foods that everyone shares -

Lawd! How perfect looking is that cake?

I can barely recreate any dessert recipes, even with a book up my nose, I still mess up, so won't even try. Can't wait to see the final result though!
