Store nuts in Fridge?
Okay I've tried to banana search the answer to this question. Just haven't anymore time! Would someone please tell me if I am supposed to store my raw nuts and seeds and grains in glass jars in the fridge? Thanks for any advice you can give me. I always thought the answer was yes, but not sure and I can't find anything in Alissa's book.

I'm not sure of the official answer, but I keep most of my nuts in the freezer. My seeds are on the shelf in the pantry, but I go through them very quickly. I have large supplies of grains (too many to put in either frig or freezer) so I have them in white storage buckets in a closet, and take out smaller portions as needed.

Thanks for your reply gfmother. I haven't a scrap of room in my freezer now and I don't want to freeze anything else that I don't have to either. But I was just thinking.....when I buy the raw nuts, seeds, grains etc. they are in bins in the hfs or in the store called "Bulk Barn". Now I don't know how long they actually sit there - how often they have to replace them, but I bet they aren't in any fridges in their back rooms. Hmmm. Anyone else have some information?

When I open a new bag I put as much as possible in an air tight glass jar in the fridge, and the rest goes in the freezer.
I've found that hazelnuts usually goes rancid very fast for me, even in the fridge, so I always keep them in the freezer. But other nuts are fine for a long time in the fridge.
I've also found that almonds and sunflower seeds will keep for a long time in room temperature.

I've got just the white nuts in the fridge and everything else in the pantry in glass air tight containers...

I store them in the freezer as well. Double triple quadruple sealed up in seal a meal and freezer bags. There's nothing worse than having your nuts smell funny, you know?

Well, sounds like many think the freezer is the place for the nuts. The fridge will just have to do, as my freezers are full (both fridge freezers, I mean). One of them is just full of my frozen garden greens and frozen fruit. Thanks everyone - guess I'd better get my glass jars back into the fridge first thing in the morning.
Night all. It was a great raw day and I am content tonight.:)

If you are going to be using them daily, a glass jar on the counter is fine. If you are unsure about how often you will be using them, I would store them in the Freezer, where they won't become Rancid.

I store most of my nuts in the fridge. I'd be happy to store them in the pantry in airtight container but we've had a bit of a weevil problem (the unfortunate drawback of buying mostly organic) and so store them there to avoid this.
I could not POSSIBLY store them in the freezer, there's simply no room, EVER!

I too store nuts, seeds, dates in the freezer. If you don't have room for them in the freezer, the fridge is fine.
I would suggest you ask your local HFS what the turn around time is for their bulk items. I know at my store it's quick. I mean we are filling up the bins at least twice a week...
Certain nuts arrive cold and we keep cold, like pine nuts.
I'd ask them.

I so appreciate all your answers and it looks like I will continue to store them in the fridge for now - it's just that I am running out of room. I always buy more than I should at once because I have to travel quite far to stock up on everything. I don't eat them fast enough. Perhaps I will be gobbling them up more in the days and weeks to come now that I am eating again.
And I will definitely ask about the turn-around time Veganforlife.

I've never considered freezing dates. Then again I rarely buy fresh dates.

Hi Sue -
the farmers we work with recommend storage that minimizes heat and moisture. For that reason, we store all nuts and seeds in air-tight glass jars in the refrigerator.
Hope this helps.

Just saw your post now, veganman. Yes, this really does help. You, of all the others, should know how best to store them. But other Rawbies, I sure do thank all of you for your help too. Thank you so much. Got plenty more glass jars yesterday - air-tight and big! btw, love your Avatar - don't you just love the sea!? I sure do.

Another for the freezer! I used to keep them in the pantry when I used them a lot. I hardly use nuts anymore except cashews...so in the freezer they rest until needed!
