Red face Why didn't anyone tell me????

I just read an unbelievable article!! (meatfreezone.org)

The only thing preventing me from a nice, raw, vegan lifestyle is my insatiable, heroin-like craving for chocolate. When i was 2 years old my German grandmother came running into my room and stuffed chocolate into my mouth whenever i cried. Fifty three years later i am totally and completely addicted to the finest chocolate money can buy.

So i'm reading that cow's milk (chocolate) contains MORPHINE, and not morphine from what you are thinking, NOT from their diets, but internally-produced morphine, produced in their cells, much like poppy plants produce it, and the little baby cows drink this milk and it has a drug-like, calming effect on them, they drink more, they get sleepy and happy (sounds just like me). Nature's drug!! Furthermore, the CASEIN that we all know is in milk breaks down into segments called casomorphins, just one segment of which is as strong as 1/10 of regular morphine. And to make matters even worse, there is also something called PEA in chocolate (cow's milk) that resembles amphetamines!!! Yikes!!!

I'm happy that there is finally a logical reason why i crave this stuff so much. There is an actual drug in it. I can live without milk, cheese, meat, yogurt, all of that, but this explains my obsession with chocolate. Just makes me feel better to know what i am fighting with here.

Wow that's interesting!! But all of those things aren't in raw cacao or nibs, right? So we can still have chocolate..

I read an article about raw cacao/chocolate that has me off of it, and that was difficult as I was definitely addicted. I am hoping that raw carob will work instead.

    Here's the link http://www.living-foods.com/articles/cacao.html
Do with it what you will.

I think that the moderate use of a little bit of raw cacao is okay for me.. YMMV.
And, that's the key... we are all different.
No, I wouldn't use it daily. I don't eat anything, really, on a daily basis. I like to keep a bit of rotation going, as that seems more 'natural' to me.

I totally agree on the addictive, drug-like effects of cow milk. Cheese has it concentrated! I went off dairy a few years ago, and the health benefits were amazing!
(on the other hand, last week I had several meals with some dairy in them, and I feel like CRAP. I'm hoping to get over this soon)

    Default feel liberated....

i just feel kind of liberated, because all this time i felt like i had no willpower (which i normally do) but couldn't figure out why, and was beating myself up about it. Now i can at least think maybe it has to do with a sensitivity if not addiction to the substances in chocolate (milk). I am extremely sensitive to caffeine also. So this makes me feel better!!

i have a big white hunk of raw cacao butter and don't have a clue what to do with it!!!

    help!!

cacao beans are in the same family as coffee beans... both are toxic and have addictive properties. Thats why theyre roasted to be more digestable and make our bodies think they're just a regular cooked food toxin instead of what they really are.

Have you ever noticed how fiercly people will defend, sneak, indulge, promote chocolate? Really it cant be a good thing for people to be that crazy over it. I switched to carob if i want something chocolate like and stay off chocolate. I used to go through phases where every day i would feel i needed chocolate (i only ever ate dark, never milk chocolate) and u would always crave more, just one more piece etc. I am far better off without it.

    Default who knew?

I mean, who knew about morphine in chocolate? Veronica, you are right, it can't be healthy, and i am highly addicted to it, either physically or psychologically, or both. I cannot for the life of me eat "a little", i eat it all day long, just like an addict would do.

So......i just have to go cold turkey (tofu). I just have to stay away completely. I feel better knowing there is at least some explanation for why this has such an effect on people.

the fda allows 60 insect fragments and one rodems in a 3.5 oz serving of chocolate.
i heard organic chocolate is stricter but still allows 10% or so to be insects n a serving.
