    Default Starting Spirulina

Hi, I started taking spirulina 3 days ago and on the 2nd day I woke up to about 8 new pimples on my face! I've been dealing with acne for years but have had it under control for awhile and thought spirulina would help not only my acne but my entire body.
I thought I ate healthy before so my body detoxing surprised me.
Has anyone else experienced a detox while starting spirulina and how long does it normally last?

Our Bodies are all different thus we don't experience things the same. I don't take Spirulina but Chlorella and have not had such. If you are breaking out, your Body is trying to rid itself of things the Spirulina brought to the surface. So drink plenty of water to help with the elimination.

It could be detox, or it could be the iodine. All sea veggies and algae are rich in iodine. Too much iodine can cause acne.
I am fine taking spirulina, but I find that if I take kelp powder I get acne. Kelp powder has way more iodine than spirulina, but spirulina still has a considerable amount of iodine.
Do you use iodized salt, by any chance? If you do, you should definitely switch to sea salt.

yea the spirulina is probably bringing the bad things to the surface, once it goes away it might come back. Also, are you taking it in powdered form, if so, did you notice it bubbling with water as if it was photosynthesizing? because that's the first thing i ntoiced, it was cool

Oh wow, I didn't think it would be high in iodine! I stopped eating spinach for that reason. Great..
No, I only use sea salt.

I hope it doesn't come back. My big breakout has healed since then but keep on getting a zit by my mouth. I know it's not from my toothpaste or touching my face. Oh well.
No, I take it in pills from NSI brand

But I would definitely give it a little while.
it might have been detoxing but i think the iodine content is what made me flare up so bad. i couldn't take it anymore so i stopped. i'm taking other vitamins instead. oh well

    Actually, that's not true.
Spirulina is NOT "rich in iodine."

Also, I'm confused, RS, because I just read another thread where you stated you eat up to half a cup of sea veggies daily - and sea veggies are VERY rich in iodine.

In any case, jlB88, there are myriad reasons why you might be having the reaction you are, but it's not iodine.

Iodine is a mineral that has been clinically proven to aggravate acne. Even though at curezone.com they swear by iodine therapy. I don't know, I avoid iodine and my skin got better.

What I was saying is that you're not getting excess iodine from spirulina.
I thought that was pretty clear.

I was also wondering in that post about what seemed to be an inconsistency in something someone else said about their own practices, but the main point was that spirulina is not a source of iodine, as illustrated in the graphic I posted.
