I will be sending off for Alissa's book today when I get off of work. I have been looking through the posts and you all sound so wonderful. I am looking for a healthy lifestyle and to lose about 100 pounds in the process. I have horrible joint pain and I am on Celebrex, it helps but I would love to get off of it forever!

Good for you! You will LOVE her book, and if you can afford it, I highly recommend her DVD as well. It will really make you see how easy it is to prepare all the recipes. Welcome!

Thank you I was just coming in to look at it. Can you tell me what the Master Cleanse is? I'm from Avon, just a little ways from St Cloud.

I've heard of the Master Cleanse, but I don't know! I tried to do Ejuva Cleanse, but I only got about 3 weeks into it because it totally constipated me which is the opposite of what it's supposed to do, I think! Sorry to be so graphic. Anyway, I'd like to know about the master cleanse, too. I just found this thread which mentions it: http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/forum/sho...=4580#post4580

How's the weather in MN? It's about 20 degrees here during the day.

    Hi, and welcome!!

I've tried the master cleaser a few years back, but gave up, because it got so boring... also, after a few days I left the cayenne pepper out of it, because it was just too spicy...

Now, I receive Frederic Patenaude's E-zine every two weeks, and he has written down his opinion about this cleaser. For your convenience, I copy-pasted it in this reply, I will also add his opinion about cayenne pepper in another reply... hopefully this helps. I'm not saying you shouldn't do the Master, but maybe a juice fast would be better, a little bit easier to follow, and probably has the same results... I don't know, maybe you should also hear other people's opinion... I'm just doing this to help you

    FredÂ’s BS-Meter: The Master Cleanser
    **********************************************

Question: “What do you think about the Master
    Cleanser”?

Answer: I advise against the Master Cleanser.

    Here is why:

The “Master Cleanser” recipe consists of warm
    water
mixed with maple syrup, cayenne pepper, lemon
    juice
    and maple syrup.

It is claimed that the Master Cleanser "dissolves
    and eliminates
toxins, cleanses the kidneys, purifies the glands
    and cells, and
    helps purify the liver."

This affirmation is of course based on nothing
    solid at all.

Please understand that there is no food that will
    cleanse the liver
or purify the liver. Only the body has the
    ability to do so. Water
is a carrying agent that is used to remove toxins
    out of the body.
Lemon juice has no action on the body. Once it is
    digested, it
doesn't help cleanse anything. Cayenne pepper is
    an irritant.
Maple syrup is a simple sugar that is inferior to
    fruit sugar.

All the benefits that you would get from the
    Master Cleanser
come from simply refraining from eating solid
    food for a few
days. You would get better results if you fasted
    3-4 days in
bed rather than doing this "cleanse" for 7-10
    days.

I do not recommend it because I oppose to the use
    of cayenne
pepper. I wrote in my book The Raw Secrets about
    cayenne
pepper: "Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, which
    is a very
poisonous substance. You can easily prove to
    yourself the
toxicity of hot peppers by observing your bodyÂ’s
    reactions after
eating them. The mouth salivates and the nose
    often runs with
clear mucus or water. These are ways for the body
    to dilute the
poison. The warm feeling that we get is the
    irritation of the digestive
tract and stomach. The body temperature often
    rises as the body
tries to get rid of this strong, toxic substance.
    Another argument
against hot peppers and spices, is that children
    will refuse them.
No one would give a hot pepper to a child."

It is also claimed that the Master Cleanser
    "eliminates all unusable
waste and hardened material in the joints and
    muscles."

Again, this is simply hype. Only the body has the
    ability to remove
unusable waste. The water is simply a carrying
    agent and the
lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne are digested
    or rejected
and have no part to play in this process. You
    would get the same
results from drinking water only for a day or
    two.

It is claimed that the Master Cleanser "builds a
    healthy blood
stream." How is that possible? Blood stream is
    build by eating
a variety of foods, and there is nothing special
    in maple syrup,
cayenne pepper and lemon juice that will make
    that process
    better or faster.

It's also said that the Master Cleanser "relieves
    pressure and
irritation in the nerves, arteries and blood
    vessels."

Again, this just comes from not eating solid food
    for a few days.
You would get the same results with juices,
    water, or any other
    type of "cleanse"

There is nothing special about the Master
    Cleanser.

    Yours,

    Frederic

    Default cayenne pepper

Here's the rest from another E-zine from Fred about cayenne pepper:

    FredÂ’s BS-Meter: Cayenne Pepper
    **********************************************

Do you like when it burns?
Or why I donÂ’t believe in cayenne pepper.

    --

In the last issue of my politically incorrect
    “BS-Meter,” I
    criticized the “Master Cleanser”

I then got some fiery e-mails from some readers
    who didnÂ’t agree
with me. They affirmed that cayenne pepper has
    some “miracle
properties” and suggested that I read a little
    book on the subject.

But my belief is that cayenne is a harmful
    substance and
doesnÂ’t have healing properties, at least not
    enough to justify
eating it. Only the body has the ability to heal
    itself and it
certainly does not help to give it irritants,
    such as cayenne pepper.

I can only quote Dennis Nelson in his book
    “Maximizing Nutrition”:

“Another illusion associated with cayenne pepper
    is that it aids
the healing process. Again, the truth is the
    exact opposite of
what seems to be apparent. Since there is an
    increased outpouring
of mucous when cayenne is eaten, it is falsely
    assumed that the
pepper is cleaning out old mucous deposits from
    the body.
Actually, the body secretes this extra mucous
    coating to protect
itself from the harmful, irritating alkaloids in
    the peppers. It then
uses the mucous secretions to eliminate these
    alkaloids. This
is the bodyÂ’s defensive response and should be
    recognized as such.”

Does this start to make sense? If not, read what
    Dr. Herbert
Shelton had to say about cayenne pepper and other
    spices:

“All condiments act as irritants and, as a
    consequence, induce
inflammation in the digestive tract. Their
    continued use results
in hardening (toughening) of the mucous lining of
    the alvine
canal. This hardening renders the delicate
    membranes less
sensitive to their irritating qualities, but
    cripples the efficiency
of the membranes. Cayenne or red pepper is about
    the most fiery
    of all condiments.”

LetÂ’s keep on reading what Shelton had to say
    about
    cayenne pepper:

“The irritation caused by mustard, pepper,
    horseradish,
cayenne, and other hot and exciting substances,
    due to highly
poisonous essential oils, which, in the pure
    state, quickly
produce blisters upon the skin, and which in
    condiments when
taken internally, exert their irritating effect
    upon the more
delicate membranes of the digestive tract, excite
    the stomach
to increasedaction in certain aspects, but lessen
    the secretion of
gastric juice and, later, decrease the activity
    of the stomach.

    (...)

"If pepper is taken by the non-user, its burning
    may be felt in the
stomach. It may even result in diarrhea. When it
    passes out with
the stools on the same of the following day, the
    non-user
experiences the same irritation and burning in
    the rectum that
he experienced in the mouth and throat when he
    ate the pepper.
If it is habitually employed, nature is compelled
    to thicken and
harden the membrane of the mouth, throat,
    stomach, intestine
and colon to protect these against its
    influence.”

HereÂ’s what I have to say about it:

If you by mistake put a little cayenne pepper on
    your eyes, and
IÂ’m sure it has happened to many people (it did
    to me!). It will burn
you intensely. What do you think is happening
    inside of your own
    body when you eat it?

When you first tried to eat a hot pepper, did you
    absolutely enjoy
or did you scream and run to go look for the
    water jug like your
life depended on it? And did you notice that all
    that water that you
drank didnÂ’t seem to extinguish the fire at all?

If you give a hot pepper to a child, will he
thank you for the gift or
will he wonder what he did wrong to deserve such
    an unfair
    punishment?

You only know the answer to those questions. If
    in spite of that,
you really want to keep on using cayenne pepper,
    itÂ’s up to you.
    I, personally, will go without.

    Frederic
    *******************************************

Btw: the thing that Shelton says about cayenne pepper, it's so true!
Not so long ago, before turning ro raw, I had a 'hot and spicy' pizza from Pizza Hut (don't know if you know which one I mean, that's how it's called here in Belgium, it's the spicy one with the green peppers)
anyways, I really enjoyed it (the only time I'll eat meat, otherwise I'm a strict vegetarian... ) but it was really really spicy, and it did burn a bit in my throat.
The day after, I went to the toilet, and OMG I swear! It hurt like hell! It was like -pardon my french- my but just burned off! of course, as it was a lage pizza, I ate the rest of it the day after, and again, my toiletvisit was painfull

so yeah, there you go... hope this info helps...

    take care,

    Joke (= my name)

    Cnjd36,

Welcome to a whole new world. Alissa's Book and DVD are absolutley wonderful. My son watched the DVD and decided to add more raw to his diet - he loves the almost tuna as I do as well.

I found that after being raw (I am fasting now to go back to 100% raw), my knee joint pain is gone and it is still gone.

If you have a juicer, you may desire to try these recommeded recipes for a healthy alternative

    Pineapple Juice
    1/4 fresh pineapple, with skin

    Cleansing Juice Cocktail
    1 beet
    1/2 apple, seeded
    4-5 carrots, greens removed
1/4 inch slice fresh ginger root

    Garden Salad Juice
    3 broccoli flowerets
    4 - 5 carrots
    2 stalks celery
    1/2 green pepper
    1 clove garlic, peeled

    GingerBerry Fizz
    1 quart fresh blueberries
    1 medium bunch grapes
1/4 inch slice fresh ginger root
    Sparkling water

Ginger Hopper Juice - My Breakfast and Lunch for today woohoo
1/4 inch slice fresh ginger root
    4 - 5 carrots
    1/2 apple, seeded

Consider a trial of an exclusion diet eliminating the nightshade family, namely tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, capsicum and tobacco. It is theorized that the solanum alkaloids found in these foods, when consumed over a long period, trigger inflammatory joint degeneration. Similarly, citrus fruits may cause joint swelling in some people and should therefore be avoided, although others find they can tolerate them well.

    Hope this helps :)

    Default Mc

    Hi cnjd36 & Melanie,

Here are 2 links that explaines the Master Cleanse:

    http://www.curezone.com/cleanse/bowe...er_cleanse.asp

    http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/...r_cleanse.html

I have done the Master Cleanse a few times. You do feel great while on it.

If you are 100% raw, I wouldn't do it because the maple syrup isn't raw. Since I'm not 100% raw and at the two times I did it, I was eating so much junk, I knew that the MC was a whole lot better than all the junk I was eating. It was like a transition for me to get off the "junk". I don't use the pepper in mine. My son drinks it, in place of pop. When he doesn't drink it, his allergies kicks up. When he drinks it, his allergies are better. Note: He's not raw. I just believe that the raw lemon juice is much better for him than pop and booze.

Yeah, there's stuff out there for or against EV-ER-Y-THING. I've heard differing opinions about the MC just as I've heard differing opinions on enemas, colonics, raw food, etc.

You have to weigh things out, perhaps try it and see how it works for YOU. I've seen many who've done the MC and had nothing but good things and rave reviews about what it did for them and their health and even jumpstarting them to a life of eating a raw diet.

I personally like the MC lemonade WITH the cayenne! ;)
