Real Cold Milled
I bought a product by Hodgson Mill. It is certified Organic Milled Flax Seed
It says it has been real cold milled. It states it has not been prepared like conventional milling and the product has not been damaged by high heat temperature.
Can anyone tell me if this would be a raw product.
If not would it be pretty close to one. It does say refrigerate after opening.
Sounds Ok, but to know for sure you would have to contact the company and ask exactly how the flax is processed and what is the maximum temperature reached during processing. cold-milled sounds ok..but keep in mind that some companies have different ideas of what "cold-milled" or "cold-pressed" means, and different opinions regarding at what temperature things are "damaged" by heat--i.e. they might still call it "cold"-processed but it might not be processed at below 118 degrees..which means its compromised.
your BEST bet for flax next time is to just buy a coffee grinder for ten bucks and then fresh grind it yourself from bulk flax. apparently flax goes rancid very easily, but if you fresh grind it yourself you dont have to worry much about this. usually much cheaper in the long run to just buy whole flaxseeds from the bulk bins.
I heard about this. Is it really cheaper and where do I purchase raw bulk flax seed. Money is sort of an issue at the moment.
organic whole flax seed is usually $2 or less per pound in my experience. you should be able to get it in any health food shop in the "bulk" bins section. you just take the amount you want, write the code on the label, and they weight it at the checkout. either the brown flax or the golden flax is fine. I just heard a lecture by a raw doctor and he said that ground nuts and seeds when you grind them should be refrigerated immediately and used within like 3 days to prevent rancidity. whenever i use ground flax or sunflower or whatever i always just grind up the amount i need in the coffee grinder and then use it right away. anyway, you should be able to get it no problem at a health food shop or coop, and Whole foods likely has it as well. Some other grocery stores may have the whole seeds packed in 1 lb plastic packages or whatever, this is still probably way cheaper than your ground seeds--i know that here in ireland one of my friends paid 8 euro (13 bucks or so) for half a pound or something of ground flax seed. i told her let me know next time she needs it and ill coffeegrind her some... AMAZING that they charge so much extra for grinding it, and/ but that the quality decreases rapidly after it is ground. so you pay more for less nutrition, and, if its gone rancid, for BAD nutrition...funny how they can get away with that, huh? you should be able to pick up a coffee grinder for about 10 bucks whereever.

If you use a vitamix.....when you make a smoothie, you can add some flax seed to it and the blender blows the little seeds apart. I really like the flavor it adds to the smoothie. My other blender wouldn't break the seeds down. By the way, I've been grinding my own flax seed in a coffee grinder for years and it's great. The pre-ground might be okay but I've read and been told that the oils in flax can go rancid really quick....so I just grind it up when I need it. There is also 2 different types of flax seed and I've loved them all. They pretty much taste the same, just different colors.

you can start a new thread by hitting the new thread button which is at the top of the page, to the left...under user cp, blogs, faq, etc....it's just above all of the new discussions.
The flax has probably been milled a long time ago and is no longer fresh. It is best (and cheapest) to grind your own, fresh. You can do it in a vitamix or a clean coffee grinder.
