Dangerous bananas???
Anyone ever hear of this one before......I had been feeling really sick Wednesday and Thursday, may be TMI but I threw up every last thing I had ever eaten I think and then Friday woke up feeling pretty good, a little shaky, but fine. Soooooo I made a couple of frozen bananas into a smoothie and slowly had that. Kept it down so I had another for lunch, and one for dinner too...hey, it was working. Went to soccer practice and when I went to get out of the car my leg wouldn't budge, figured it was stiff but quickly realized I couldn't move it AT ALL, paralyzed from my hip to my toes! I pulled it back in the car and sat there for about 45 minutes until I figured it was safe to drive and went home, feeling really bad, dizzy, horrible headache....I called a nurse I know and got yelled at for trying to exist on fruit.....and on and on...but she determined, and my medical book that I was flipping through confirmed....too much potassium can cause temporary paralysis!!!! Who knew?!?
So needless to say, I fell off my 30 day challenge this weekend out of sheer fear, but went apple picking Sunday and am back on today!
Hey, does anyone know any BAD effects too many apples can have on the body? That banana incident was frightening!
By the way, I'm going in for a hair analysis as soon as I can to see why that might have happened so quickly.

WOW! Sorry that happened to you and glad you're okay!
I've never heard of that before and I practically LIVE off of bananas. I have banana smoothies everyday, eat bananas as snacks (fresh and dehydrated) and I put bananas in my grawnola. I eat a LOT of them and have never experienced such a thing.
This is a very new bit of information on me about the potassium thing. Now I experienced a temporary feeling of paralysis only once in my life and that was after my first colonic. I was VERY toxic and VERY constipated (sorry if TMI) and when she did my colonic and once it was over and I went to the bathroom to "finish up"...I sat there with my legs propped up on the stool thingy they have in front of the toilet and my legs first began to tingle and I felt a little weak and then my legs kinda went numb. She stopped at the door to ask how I was doing and I told her what was going on and she said that was due to the toxins having been stirred up in my blood stream, etc.
After a while, it went away and I felt great.
I know these are two different scenarios, but I'm just wondering if it was something else in CONJUNCTION with what you had consumed because again, there are days I eat a ton of bananas and that's never happened.

You know that's what I thought....and what you wrote really confirmed what I found out on the web this morning. It shouldn't happen, unless there is something else going on in your body, blocked clolon, cysts on overies, cancer, liver disease....SOOOOOO I made an appointment to see the doctor today. I really hate going in to see him, he doesn't like my ideas most of the time, need to find a new doc with a more open mind.....
Anyways, I'll let you know what comes of it.
Maybe I was on the right path and was seriously detoxing....BUT I've also noticed blood in my stool and need to get checked out, NOW.

Hi shay, its not the bananas. Having blood in your stools is not a good thing.
Maybe you can find a good holistic doctor near you. Where do you live?
Many times when we begin to heal all of our old issues come up. Im sure that must have been scary for you! Please keep us posted and let us know what you find out.

Hi Shay,
A potassium level that is too high or too low can be dangerous. Abnormal potassium levels may cause symptoms such as muscle cramps or weakness, nausea, diarrhea, frequent urination, dehydration, low blood pressure, confusion, irritability, paralysis, and changes in heart rhythm.
I have noticed many posts over the last several days and have discovered that many people interested in the raw food lifestyle are consuming certain fruits and/or vegetables very frequentely, without the variety that is necessary for abundant health.
When certain foods are consumed in succession, the digestive enzymes required to process those foods become depleted; when a diet rich with variety is consumed, digestive enzymes work in tandem, and the body is not unnaturally stripped of one or another by consuming only one type of food.
The same principle works with vitamins and minerals ~ each of them can be isolated, yes, but are most effective when working together. (Magnesium being required to properly absorb calcium, for instance.)
That being said, I agree with Allisa ~ see your holistic doctor! You may also consider what's commonly referred to as "leaky gut syndrome". After many years of eating foods that are toxic to our systems, the immune system begins to weaken, and the body has difficulty in eliminating waste quickly. When that impacted waste matter sits in your intestinal tract, it begins to harden and create a sort plaque-like deposit. Over time the substance irritates the intestinal wall and creates tiny tears in the intestinal tissue ~ you can imagine the damage when the molecules of toxicity begin to travel in the bloodstream rather than staying within the confines of the intestinal wall! As we begin to heal our systems, and flush out toxic matter, it "stirs up" the the deposits and irritates the tract as it begins to move through our systems. This can create tears which will result in blood in the stool. "Leaky gut syndrome" is fairly unfamiliar to mainstream medical doctors... much the way chronic fatigue and canidiasis was unaccepted within those circles and people suffering from those dis-eases were told it was all in their head. I wish you all the luck in getting to the bottom of this! It can be scary, I know.
Well, I've blabbed on well enough. I wish you a speedy recovery and abundant health.
Cheers,
Wrecked Spark

Thanks everyone for your concern...I saw my doctor, not holisitic, VERY conventional, but he is running some blood tests and I'm currently on a heart monitor.(?) At the very least he listened. Anyways if nothing comes of this, or even if he finds something, a friend reccomended her doctor.
I know I need to eat a better variety, but since I wasn't feeling well, stuck with the same old same old.
I'm sure I'll be fine, just curious to see what's going on.

Some celery often helps balance out too much potassium. After vomitting and diarrhea there can be a strong need for sodium.
Hope you're feeling better.
