    Default tailbone pain?

At least that's what I think it's called in english.

I'm doing the 5 tibetan rites every day but lately I've been experiencing pain in my tailbone when doing ritual #2 (that's almost like a situp). I've tried with something soft underneath but it doesn't help.

Any ideas on how to get round the pain?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hey there Tanja,

I also practice The 5 Tibetans, and am also recovering from lower back tension. Though the Tibetan rites are great, they are only linear movements, meaning that they do not include mobilization throughout the entire range of movement, in this case within the sacral area of the back. For example, in Tibetan #2, we are only moving the spine in its vertical, rolling range of motion, whereas there is also the potential for sideways movement, and everything between a sideways and vertical movement. This means that many of the stabilizing muscles are not being used within the Tibetans, and possibly that those areas retaining tension in your tailbone area are other than being utilized.

There is a great article on pain-free mobility for the back here:

    HI Tanja ~

I am very into yoga therapy and it's funny you should mention your tailbone because we just got into a huge discussion last night about the "tailbone"

Anyhow, I guess that some people have discovered that they have a longer column and that is because they have an extra few discs at the bottom. I would recommend seeing a chiropractor to have it checked out just in case. In the event that this is true for you it would be almost impossible for you to sit on the ground, cushion or no cushion. Good luck, I hope that this isn't your problem!

Thanks for your answers. I will look up the links and I will consider seeing a chiropractor.

    Thanks!

    Hi Tanja,

I broke my tailbone years ago, and even after it had supposedly healed I still experienced a lot of pain in that area when on my feet for several hours (I was a waitress in college). So I went to the doctor thinking it was that my tailbone had never healed properly, and he said it was probably muscular. My lower back was weak, and the pain was radiating down. It helped to get some really good shoes and lose some weight. :)

But you can also bruise your tailbone and that can take some time to heal. I'm no doctor, so of course I can't say for sure, but maybe you bruised yours and now it hurts even if you use a pillow. Try avoiding any pressure on it for a couple weeks, then when you go back to doing #2 use a cushion right from the start.

    Melanie
