    Default Nutritional Yeast

I've been reading here about nutritional yeast and when I read that it gives food a buttery taste, I decided I had to get some.

But does it matter what kind I get? Does anyone have a good on-line source for it?

    Thanks!!

I got mine from the health food store in town. There are different kinds and you want the yellow kind for the cheesy-buttery taste.

It's not all vegan. Be sure to read the ingredients because some contains whey.

It should be yellow and flaky/powdery... it's so widely available that you really shouldn't need to buy it online

Nutritional yeast works well for some people but not for others. Personally, I find it horrible stuff. Not for the taste, but for the way it makes my body feel like I've been eating toxic goop - that's the only way I can describe it. It slows down my digestion and it seems to unnecessarily tax my liver. I'm not saying this to dissuade you in any way - do, by all means, go ahead and try it - it may work wonders for your body. I'm only mentioning the above issues to caution you to introduce it to your body gradually.

Thanks Arky! I think I'll just get a small amount and see how it goes. :)

The Frontier and Red Star brands do not have whey. They are both Kosher and parve (no dairy products, no meat products).

And I'm just the opposite. I just love the stuff and have absolutely no side affects from it at all. Crazy bodies!
I pour some in the middle of a plate. After Spiral Slicing a potato, I take each slice and lay it in the nutritional yeast. The first side and then the second. I place it on the dehydrator sheet and when they are all done, I have cheesy chips! YUM< YUM!!!!;)
I also use it as parmesan cheese on raw italian meals and also in my raw nut cheeses.

Like I said...I love the stuff. Good luck. Hope it agrees with you too!

I love it too. It is one of those things that helps me be raw.

My latest use for it is in crackers. After spreading out the batter on the teflex sheet, I dust with nutritional yeast and a bit of salt, then press it in a bit (sesame seeds are also good for this). I do it on the other side when I flip it, too. To me, this give my crackers that "sumpthin special" I love.

OH my what a good idea! Did you think of this on your own? Wowee! I'm totally going to try this when my dehydrator is freed up!

Actually, I think Alissa must have something like this in her book...that's where I got the idea anyway. But usually she has many additions or foods and I tend to just simplify them. If you like it, I'm so glad I shared. :)

I got mine from Whole Foods, but I think it should be at a lot of places... just read the ingredients.

and about starting it slowly.. yeah I first started eating it with avocado's and I could only stand a pinch, anymore was gross, but that pinch was yummy.. now i'm doing a couple of tablespoons and putting it on everything. hahaha.
