Default 51 and New to the Game

Hi, everyone -- so happy to have found you over 50's! I've been raw fooding for about 1.5 weeks now. I aim for 70-80% raw each day (100% just really isn't practical for me -- though I admire those of you who do 100%).

Here's what brought me to raw food:

I've always been very healthy -- and very interested in health and how to stay out of the doctor's office. Don't get me started on healthcare in America! Modern American medicine is great for emergencies and trauma, but when it comes to disease treatment and prevention, well, I think we've got it "wronger" than anybody. In my opinion, doctors seem to treat the symptoms and don't much care about getting to the cause and fixing the problem once and for all. The one thing I do know is it's going to be up to us to take care of ourselves as we age. For me, blind trust in doctors won't get me to where I want to be as I age -- I intend to remain vital and active up until it's time to exit stage left.

Another thing is . . . I've been vegetarian for 14 years, mostly vegan for the last few months. But the weight still wasn't budging -- it is so hard to lose it at this age! But I've lost four pounds since starting the raw food thing 1.5 weeks ago. The thing is, my daughters tell me I don't look my age, but if I could lose the weight, I know I'd look so much better -- and YOUNGER.

I won't lie -- I want to look younger. LOL! And I think raw food is going to be just the way to go.

At any rate, so glad to have found this board, and I'm really looking forward to getting to know all of you. I've been lurking awhile, and you've already inspired me!

Oh and P.S. I'm absolutely open to any and all tips and advice! Let 'er rip, potater chip!!

Its a great age to embark on to RAWmacious living! You have a great foundation under you -- so many years as a vegetarian and then as a vegan - that is awesome...

There is another post in the general discussion area - where I posted some of the before and after photos of the RFT board members... great for inspiration.... check it out when you have time!!

For what it's worth, I carried alot of post menopausal weight around for years and couldn't get it to budge. Eating RAW, it all just droped off---37 lbs. worth anyway, in about3 mos. (Well, 30 lb.s in 3 mos. and then seven more over the next few months. It has stayed off now for well over a year. Welcome to the free RAW world!

Yes, VFL -- I had a green smoothie last nite and one this morning for breakfast! I definitely think greens are the way to go. By the way, your pictures look great. Do you mind if I ask how much weight you lost?

BJ -- good to know that about the postmenopausal weight! It's my intent to follow in your footsteps.

    Wink

I lost 30 pounds in 5 months and a lot of it was due to taking a ziplock bag of raw veggies with me everywhere. Then I wasn't tempted to eat things I shouldn't. I ate raw green beans, raw sweet potatoes (fabulous!), radishes sliced thin, cauliflower and yellow squash sliced thin. I was eating vegetarian, then vegan and then I discovered raw. So satisfying! I also ingest essential oils everyday and that helps me lose weight, stay regular and be healthy. I take 1 to 2 tablespoons a day of Udo oil or flax seed oil. Good luck to you. You're in the right place!

WOW THAT IS VERY IMPRESSIVE I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU I also have alot of PM weight -- 60 lbs of it, I am 55 and started this
about three weeks ago I purchased the The Raw Food Detox Diet by Natalia Rose, it makes so much sense to me, first week lost 5 lbs, then gained back 3 and got stuck, so I reached out to the author and she advised me that her book is a basic guideline and especially for a women it may need to be tweaked, so I cut out all of the nuts, dried fruits and grains now and eat 75% raw, I do have steamed Fish and Veggies with dinner. However, I still am stuck... very frustrating
    Thanks for listening
