    Default Citric Acid

I am new to sprouting and on the sprout instructions it says to add 1/4 tsp or so of citric acid to the rinse water to inhibit mold. Would ascorbic acid (powdered vitamin C) work as well??
    Thank you~:)

I don't usually add anything to the water and there is never any mold.

I do occassionally add a few drops of GSE (grapefruit seed extract) to rinse and soak the equipment for cleaning and maintaining my sprouter.

I have had mold when learning how to sprout because I used too many seeds or didn't change the water often enough. It took some practice batches to get the hang of it.

don't know about citric acid... other than GSE.

My husband and I just took a sprouting class and it has really helped. If you are using mason jars, use a nylon mesh screen fit over the top of the jar with an elastic band. This way, you can leave the jars to drain in a dish drying rack at 45 degrees and nothing but water will drain out. This way, rinsing each morning and draining all day, there is little chance for mold to build up. I have had great success sprouting alfalfa and mung bean this way.

Also, keep your jars out of direct sunlight and too much indoor lighting to discourage mold growth.

I'm sprouting for the first time today and this info really helps (just in time). Thanks Rawnerino!

I have another sprouting question. I haven't sprouted because it just seems strange - how do I make breads and crackers, etc out of sprouts? Do I just grind them like I would if they weren't sprouted??
