Oops. I was typing in too much of a hurry. "Hulled" barley won't sprout either. "Unhulled" barley is what's needed.
    My bad.

Hi! I just saw this thread and thought I'd share how I sprout my buckwheat. (I've never sprouted barley, so I'm no help there)

I use a large plastic strainer to do the buckwheat. First, soak overnight. Then toss the buckwheat into a strainer and spread them around in a thin layer, you don't want them all bunched up.

Rinse and drain 2-3 times a day and in a couple days, they're ready to go. I think buckwheat is really easy this way and they never smell bad. I usually cover them with a paper towel/kitchen towel. But they get lots of air circulation this way as opposed to being in a jar.

    HTH!

Oh, I forgot...I do use mason jars for sprouting small seeds like alfalfa, clover, radish, etc. with cheesecloth on top. But with the bigger sprouts like buckwheat, I find they're better with a little more room.

Default Help with seeds and beans for sprouting

I am wondering if anyone know or has tried to use org. bulk beans and grains to sprout from Whole foods or do they have to be esp. for sprouting from somewhere on the net? Thanks

When I went to the Raw Spirit Fest, I met the "sproutman". He has lots of info on sprouting. His sprout bags work well. Here is his link

    Sprouting is easy.

thanks annavon that is the answer I was looking for so, I guess one can use them but they probably won't be as effective or maybe even taste as good. Where do you buy your seeds, beans etc. ?

I usually get them at Whole Foods, but I bought some from Sproutman as well.
