Help!
I have been raw for 2 months now--and have been too scared to start sprouting...but I went to a raw potluck last night and had AMAZING pizza with sprouted barley/buckwheat....so I want to start. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Don't be scared of sprouting! Just put whatever you want to sprout in water before you go to bed at night, drain in the morning, and wait a few days for the sprouts to start showing. Then you can either eat them as they are or use them in recipes. I think I've end up sprouting lentils the most. They're great on top of salads or to use in Alissa's BBQ chicken fingers! If you're using nuts, they won't sprout, so all you need to do is soak them overnight and then drain them. Easy as that! The only thing is that it does take a little more thought if you want them for a recipe......you need to make sure everything's sprouted for when you want to make the recipe.

get a jar, a regular old mason jar. if you can find special sprouting lids, then great-if not, just use some fine netted material-i use a piece of the netted plastic bag that my oranges come in and then put it on with a rubberband.
let the seeds soak overnight with enough water to account for the size increase of the seeds whilst soaking.
in the morning, drain out the water and either cover the jar or let sit somewhere dark so that they can sprout. it depends on the seeds used, as far as how long it will take them to sprout.
oh yea, make sure to rinse the seeds plenty.

Get the HULLED barley/buckwheat.
Pulling out hulls from those beautiful sprouts is really boring.

So I started the sprouting process last night.... I hope it works out well! Thanks for the help!

right now im sprouting more quinoa and some garbanzos-- the quinoa has already burst and tiny shoots are coming out! its exciting.

I am sprouting barley and buckwheat....I'm doing everything by the book--I haven't seen them since this morning, but they didn't look any different....I'm crossing my fingers!

sproutpeople.com is the way to go. its got me all excited about sprouting...

Thanks for the link....my buckwheat is sprouting YAY! But my barley hasn't started yet....maybe it just takes a little longer?

Your right different seeds take longer/shorter to sprout. What I really love is when I put sunflower seeds in my salad, then I put the leftovers in the fridge and when I finish it in a few days the sunflower seeds have already begun to sprout. Oh, Alissa has a whole section on sprouting and charts for all the different types of things you can sprout, in her book.

Bad Smell when sprouting?
I was rinsing my sprouts twice a day and was making sure they were well ventilated, but by the fourth day they smelled HORRIBLE! I emptied the containers into my compost--what happened?

[QUOTE=kaylene;396222]....by the fourth day they smelled HORRIBLE!.../QUOTE]
I had the same problem. I have been trying for weeks to sprout barley. I have tried many versions of barley and am unable to successfully sprout them. I also was interested in making pizza, calzone and many of Alissa's other recipes calling for sprouted barley. I would appreciate whatever suggestions anyone could provide.
Thanks!

Hi Kaylene,
To prevent spouting seeds from spoiling, it's important to be certain they are well drained. Stretch a doubled piece of cheesecloth or plastic nylon mesh over the mouth of the jar and tie it with a string. Then invert it in a dish drainer at a 45 degree angle, so the jar is continually drained but the seeds are not blocking the opening. Continue to rinse and drain twice a day, leaving the jars upturned in the dish drainer as described above.
An easier alternative is to purchase hemp bags made for sprouting. You place the seeds inside the bag and pull the drawstring closed. Soak in a bowl of water and then place in a dish drainer or hang over the sink to drain. (Follow the directions that come with the hemp bags.)
You mentioned in another post that the barley hadn't sprouted yet. You aren't trying to sprout "pearled" barley, are you? Pearled barley won't sprout. You need to use "hulled" barley.
Bookmark this URL for some time down the line should you ever decide to become serious about growing and eating sprouts. It's likely the very best and easiest automatic sprouter you can buy. Plus, you can get plans to build one from parts purchased locally.
Namaste,
Mark

Men...
I was in the kitchen this morning get some barley, lentils and sunflower seeds ready for sprouting. My husband came into the kitchen and asked me what I was doing. I answered "Sprouting." He laughed and said "That sounds like some kind of disease." Men....LOL
