What do you eat after a workout?
Hello
I'm wondering what everyone eats after a workout? I have been told to eat protein after weight lifting but I like to just eat fruit in the mornings (when I excersise)...Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Right afterwards I like to have a baby coconut and/or some fresh juice! Then a little while later a salad.

I had a green smoothie after my workout today. I heard greens were higher in amino acids. That is really why we ate protien to begin with because protien breaks down into amino's for our body to use. Being a body builder I use to drink protien shakes after my workouts, so I figure green smoothies will work the same way. ;)
*edited to add this thought* BTW, I use to also take amino supplements after every workout to help with soreness too. I'm anxious to see if drinking green smoothies helps that too.

Angie

Angie,
PLease do keep us informed on how the results go for you! I will be weightlifting here in the near future and am anxious to get started again (I used to weight lift too and used the creatine and the protien shakes, bleh!); although, I am supplementing right now with chlorella because I am way from being 100% raw right now. I've heard that about 1 T of honey after a workout helps recovery too (also bee pollen).

Yes I heard Bee Pollen was high in amino's too. I just started getting Mike Snyder's newsletter and he just mentioned this in the last one I got. Here's his site: http://www.therawdiet.com
Here is what he said about Bee Pollen:
2. Bee Pollen is a food that is already
broken down into the individual amino
acids. It contains almost all the essential
components needed to sustain life. It is
40% protein and rich in minerals and
vitamins. It contains 21 amino acids
per serving. Bee pollen is one of the
best food sources of the nutrient lecithin.
Yesterday was my first workout in AGES. I'm doing the Body for Life lifting with the RAW eating. I am SURE this combination is the ONE for me. Before I quite lifting I had done BFL, and BRX and then I had adapted my own lifting routine. I figure since I've been off for so long I will start back with BFL, I had alot of sucess with it at one time.
I'm a bit sore today but not bad, very tolerable. I have had times after workouts where I was in tears because of the pain. I went pretty light with my weights being it was my first workout. The more I get into this more more I will report my progress. I have a journal and will try to keep it more up to date. ;)
Love,
Angie

I've been eating some type of fruit after coming home..usually an apple...and then a fruit smoothie for my actual breakfast. I have just that your body needs food/carbs etc shortly after working out to replace lost nutrients. Hopefully I am getting enough protein, which apparently is important following weights.

I do about 2 hours of exercise each morning, drinking lots of water during that time. When I get home I make a large fruit smoothie and sometimes add greens or soaked oat flakes to it. (I grind my oats and soak overnight.) This does the trick for me!
Then I am ready within about 2 hours for my large lunch salad, lots of greens and veggies are included.
Since increasing my exercise I thought I'd increase the amount of food I eat but that hasn't happened. I do like to work out on an empty stomach, just water, although I know some people prefer to eat something light before exercising.

Cinnamon, do you use rolled oats that you grind? By hand or in a coffee grinder type thing? Why do you grind and not just soak? THanks:>
I too hate eating before I work out...so it's always afterwards too...

I use oat groats and grind them in a mill grinder. It works great! Makes them like old fashioned oats or quick cooking oats depending on how many times they go through the mill. This way they are raw and I soak them for cereal (just add fruit and cinnamon!) or add them to a smoothie. I love the flavor of the oats in a smoothie, yum!

what do you eat after a workout?
I've read in Power of Raw that celery juice is one of the best sodium replacers.
So I used to make green juice with celery and apple.
But hey, I'm lazy!
I just eat banana's - good glycogen replacer! I add some almond butter.
problem is I can't stop eating them!!
I am addicted - I can down 6 in one sitting NO PROB!
There is also a raw bar, You can get it at lablaws - its even made in Canada!
called Perfect 10.
I eat this when I go for long runs while training for marathons.
Its Yummy and comes in 5 or 6 flavours.
Find it in the organic section!
My fav. is cranberry!
In my humble oppinion - don't stress out, eat whatever you feel like eating!
Just don't get carried away - portion control!!
Now if I could just follow my own advice...

I've heard that cabbage is good for l-glutamine which is an amino acid that the muscle needs for recovery after working out. Actually, most of your muscle is made up of this component. maybe adding cabbage juice or just cabbage to a green smoothie?

I always have fruit. Both whole and juiced. Fruit always seems to replenish my system right away.
